Apparently my house is worth 9% more this year, what a load of crap.
They should have a high stakes contesting option. If you lose you pay double the assessed taxes, if you win the city has to buy your house for what they are saying it's worth.

Our condo/townhome went up 9% this year, pretty much dead on with the market value we paid last year.

Yeah, I contested mine last year and won. That said they just bumped it up 10% this year so I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.

What did you use to contest? Recent comparable sales data from a realtor?

My house basically stayed the same value, so hopefully my taxes stay about the same.
On a side note, does anyone else besides me use the City of Calgary website to creep what their neighbours' houses are assessed at? I find it kind of interesting.

It's because of the smell

Mine is down $31,500. I still think it's a little high.

First and foremost call your assessor, make sure there are no errors in their information on your property. You can speak with your assessor go over everything and state your case.

Hey guys, we got our property assessment today. We live in a condominium townhouse and our property value dipped by $50,000. Whereas our neighbors took a hit of either $5000 or their value went up by $20,000. This is very surprising. Although my taxes have gone down significantly, I am not sure how to approach this issue. is there a reason why the value might have gone down when the units are maintained in similar manner?

Canyon Meadows, our house is exactly the same as last year dollar for dollar, but our cited incoming tax bill is slightly less (very slight), which I found odd. The tax rate is lower for me than last year.

I don't get this. Why are people upset when their assessed values go down? No one has ever sold a house for the city assessed value, so who cares? Lower taxes! Lucky!
My assessed value has gone up $140,000 since I moved in 3.5 years ago. It drives me nuts. Part of the appeal of the place was its low assessed value which meant I pad $1000 less in taxes when I first got it. It's up another $40k this year and I'm thinking about fighting it.

I was wondering this myself, checked out a couple of the neighbouring units and their all over the map, like a 20-30k swing in identical floor plans. One next to us is apparently $20/k less than ours... even though I know the renos listed when it was on the market should put it at slightly more than ours.

Down $6k from last year, but up about $200k since buying in '06. Saved about $100 in taxes, so nothing spectacular.

Is there a way to see how your whole neighborhood moved this year? Unless everyone is up a ton, I think I'm going to contest mine.
