Yeah I forced myself to lie on them, went to 3 different stores checking the boxing day sales..
The Brick had a Stearns and Foster one that seemed like a great deal, but when I tried it I didn't like it at all, as you say just felt hard rather than supportive.
That foam thing was one of the things I was looking for, I wanted the one with the latex (or gel foam or whatever) and that wouldn't trap heat, the one I got has like 5 zones of different foam head to toe for different support at those areas, and it really felt far more comfortable than the others I tried. Not mushy comfortable (there was one at Sears that felt very mushy), but firm comfortable, which seemed to me to be more supportive.
They tried to talk me into a 100% foam mattress (had like 7 layers of different kinds of foam to not get warm but didn't have any springs either), and that was pretty good, probably 2nd out of all the ones I tried.
