The best part was that I didn't know Telus wasn't available when I negotiated my deal with Shaw using switching to Telus as leverage, luckily the CSR didn't know either.

Sorry for the derail, but is there any good reason why Shaw's upload speeds are so low? At my parent's house they've had 25 down/3 up for years. When I moved into this current place we got the BB50 plan, with 50 down 3 up. 5 up was supposed to be phased in over time, but I noticed on their site now that it no longer says 50/5, it's now 50/3. Additionally, the BB100 used to say 100/10, but now it's 100/5. I'm pretty sure the BB250 used to be 250/25, but now it's 250/15. I'm finding myself considering upgrading my service just to get higher upload speeds.

Because the average user doesn't use that much up.
Or at least they didn't until torrents became a thing.
OT: Why the hell would anyone want to use a Telus service? They have the worst goddamn everything ever.

I use slingbox so I need higher upload speeds, I find it odd that Shaws are kept low as well.

Fair enough. Makes sense, as high-quality blu-ray rips generally stream at ~720 KB/s.

I used to be a big Shaw fanboy, and hated Telus... for over 10 years, I've basically been a Shaw evangelist. In the last couple years, however, Shaw has pissed me off a number of times, I feel like their customer service has gone to hell, their pricing is getting higher and higher, and the service is less reliable. I swore about 7 years ago that I would never have another Telus product, but I have to admit I'm considering it after my recent Shaw experiences.

I unfortunately have to work with Telus (in many departments internally and with people in the field) on a daily basis, and I will say with 100% certainty, I wouldn't trust Telus to find their ass with both hands, let alone deal with my primary functions.
Not to mention the Telus TV remote/box combo is so goddamn terrible I want to throw it out the window. I had to house sit for my in-laws a few months back, and changing the friggin' channel took as much effort as plugging in my laptop and saying "screw this".

Don't get me started on the guide on Telus TV.
It is the single most ######ed thing I have ever seen. Why the HELL do I have to go through all of the time shifted crap to get to another type of channel?
Shaw had it perfect. Group all commonly watched "Basic" channels together and then have all the special crap like time shifting and movie packages later.
After 6 months I still couldn't tell you what channel is what. I have zero clue.

That's how the technology works.
It has something to do with the coax portion of the link being broadcast instead of star topology and the multiplexing division that is required to facilitate connection to multiple endpoints. I don't remember the exact reasoning behind it, but a quick search into how hybrid fiber coax functions couild give you the gritty details, I am sure.

Yup. Basically, DOCSIS streams a movie of packets down to clients (literally! Your packets arrive in a mpeg movie stream), and each modem ignores the frames of the movie not intended for it. Upstream, the modems have to use time division multiple access (TDMA), or CDMA in DOCSIS2, which is how cell phones also share limited bandwidth.
This is a great article about how it works

I used to agree with you. Shaw was great, and offered more flexibility for me, but over the past few years, I've been forced to use Telus, and I have to say, that the service has been rock-solid.
I was still planning on going back to Shaw in this new home, but when i learned that Telus now had a comparable package, at a lower price, it was pretty much a no-brainer for me.
Combine this with the fact that I have been staying with family over the past 5 weeks while I was house hunting and starting my new job here in Calgary, and they have the Telus internet and TV, and it's been 100% hassle-free. Those two factors were enough to convince me to go with them.
And with no contract, there's no real risk in doing so. If the service were to suck 6 months from now, or if Shaw unveiled a new bundle that topped everything else, I can switch without issue.
Win/win!

Sweet, thanks for creating this thread! I had no idea about this, and I was just looking at their site yesterday (coincidentally) to see if they had anything faster than the 25mb plan I currently have.
Needless to say, I called in and got signed up! Have to wait 'til the 28th though for the dude to show up.

I was pretty certain that was just a standard package, but upon looking for it on their website, I see the latest rebranding didn't just bring "funny" robots. It would appear the prices went up across the board unless I'm missing something. I had broadband 50 and regular tv for $90/month at one point, but now it looks like that isn't available anymore.

They are supposed to show up today for me, no sign of them yet though. I have a plane to catch tonight, I hope they aren't too late getting here.

Telus is here, hooking me up. Quite the ordeal to get it all up and running, different box for fiber connection, never seen that before. Also super cool ot see that fiber is actually fed right into my house, no copper bottleneck, woot.

lol well that was anticlimactic...
Service guy says, "you're good to go", I jump on my laptop to do a quick speedtest, all excited about my new super-fast internet... and I proceed to get ... this.
WTFLOL
He says, "Oh, my bad, it doesn't load at 50, Telus needs to be turn it on at their end once I say it's installed".
Phew, had me worried there for a second.
Unfortunately, he says my 50 won't kick in until later tonight. Oh well, I'll play with it tomorrow when I get back into town.
