I know dog lovers can't see past the stupidity because they see this guy as a hero when he really is just an idiot and sadly cost two other people their lives.

You are such a blowhard.
First, it's a 16 year old kid, he's not exactly in a position to have all sorts of life experience to draw on. He sees his dog in trouble, and being 16 and feeling invincible he likely just goes for it without even realizing there's a possibility of consequences. That's a funny thing about growing up, you don't really realize that your actions may not work out as you imagined them to in your head.
But yeah, Darwin award for sure. Good old puckluck

So let me get this straight.
I get chewed out for saying that the mom should have jumped in to save her kid when she dropped him in the dog pit, but this 16 year old kid gets a pass when he jumps into raging water to save a stupid dog?
Oh CP...

You didn't get chewed out for saying the mom should have jumped in, you got chewed out for saying that some random dude should have jumped in, and that when he did he could have totally taken out a pack of wild dogs.

And you still need internet anger management.
At 16 I was just starting grade 12. If you don't understand jumping into an ocean with waves that high and powerful is a bad idea then maybe he was one of the kids at Jack James.

I'm just perplexed by the mentality on this site when it comes to Dogs.

It is worth noting how deceptive the power of water can be. I'm sure many people would agree with Rerun; they'd jump in if they thought it was safe. The question is of course is how many people with that opinion understand what it would take to kill even a good swimmer?

Pretty sad situation. As foolish as it may be in hindsight, I would do the exact same thing if it was my dog 10/10. In fact, I don't know of a single dog owner who wouldn't try and rescue his dog.

If you jump into a powerful, raging ocean, you kind of have it coming.

Sure you do! Hi.
Everybody's definition of a life-threatening situation varies of course, but as my definition stands today, I wouldn't risk my life to save my dog. Perhaps we come up with situations of varying risk so we can all graph how much we love our animals.

The first wave took the dog. I could see justifying that as a "sneaker wave" but the whole family saw it. After seeing it swallow up wishbone, the son should have realized that "hey, that 10ft wave just ate my dog, maybe I shouldn't go in there". He is 16 not 6. He's legally able to drive...

If 16 year olds weren't capable of making smart decisions, they wouldn't be allowed to drive.
Hence why he is a darwin award winner.

BS, 16 year olds almost universally think they're untouchable and greatly overestimate their ability to do pretty much everything. Adults, even adults with years of experience around water, frequently underestimate the danger posed by the ocean.
