I don't have a sidewalk in front of my house, there's one across the street.

If it needs replacing do the owners on both sides of the street pay for it or just the ones directly adjacent?

They tried to replace our sidewalk in our road a couple of years ago. The whole road signed a letter saying we didn't want/need it doing and the City said okay.

Default ***Update***

Council accepted Mayor Nenshi's proposal in the budget today to allocate capital funding that would mean that henceforth there will no longer be a direct resident assessment for 50% of sidewalk replacement. City will cover the whole cost.

Council will also be considering in two weeks allocating $10.2 million to reduce the amount of existing city-initiated "Local Improvement" assessments for sidewalk replacement. There is currently approximately $17 million in outstanding payments from existing local improvements. If approved, this will mean that likely anyone that has a current assessment will have their monthly payment be more than halved for the remainder (me included - I have 11 years left on a local improvement.)

Shout out to Ward 9 Alderman Gian-Carlo Carra for initiating the discussion on this policy several months ago. That led to the mayor proposing some availiable funding to address this.

Done.

Hi Bunk! Thanks so much for the update!

Do you happen to know if a notice that has already been sent out will be converted, or will this only apply to new work going forward? That is, should we still petition to oppose it given the levy was calculated pre- new budget?

Thanks.

Just to clarify, your question is "Will someone else be paying for it, because if so I would like to retract my opposition to the project"

Delay as long as possible - until 2013 when this kicks in.

No, that wouldn't be the question at all. Property taxes still pay for this (and a 5.5% increase will contribute no doubt). I disagree with the rationale of it being funded by a local improvement levy. Now it is fair for all.

It would be a cold day in hell before I would pay one dime towards sidewalk replacement, they soak us for enough in taxes. The sidewalk is on their property, not mine and to me it is just another chore to shovel/salt etc. Perhaps they should look at why they are breaking - where I live folks are perpetually U-turning and often drive over the sidewalk, often large trucks (including City trucks) - why should I pay for idiots to go round and round like a circus?

This guy is bumping all these threads that have things to do with sidewalks. Two about shovelling them and one about replacing. Just bizarre.

While we're talking about civic matters, Bunk, I have a bone to pick about this extra 50-some million smackeroos you crooks at Silly Hall have. I want my share. It's not yours. Give it back!!
