you guys are all off base here, it is importnat that we have the freedom to choose where we all get our hair cut. once this issue is settled, the human rights commission will be able to disband as all of canada's problems will be solved.
this woman deserves our thanks, praise and a multi-million dollar settlement for her pain, suffering and inconvience.

As trivial as this may seem on the surface, I'm tired of people using religious beliefs to justify discrimination, which is essentially what this is.

I heard a truly pathetic story today. A muslim guy at my company wouldn't shake the hand of a new female employee he was introduced to. He had the gall to tell her it was against his belief system to shake a woman's hand.
Why would this cave man even want to come to a Western Country? I think the guy is a P.Eng so it's not like he's uneducated. I know not all muslims are this extreme but this was a shocking reminder to me how primitive some belief systems are that exist even in Canada.

It is specifically mentioned twice.
In the 'Lifestyle' section and then again in 'Health and Beauty'.

Actually, that's quite common. I've known many Muslim that will refuse.

And you are not allowed to TOUCH the hand of a woman, so a fist-bump is out too.

No, it really isn't common. I know about 3 muslim men that do not shake the hands of a Woman, and I am muslim so I'm not sure how you can say it's quite common when I'm sure I know a lot more muslim men than you do. Other muslims laugh and ridicule them. These guys are usually the same kind of brainwashed people who strap bombs to themselves. It doesn't say anywhere in the Koran that you can't shake the hand of a woman.

This dispute will end up with dueling human rights complaints and everyone remotely involved will end up covered in mud. There will be no winner unless common sense kicks in right away.

Common sense is that the barbers should have just cut her hair. Discrimination is discrimination.

They should have cut her hair and did a absolutely terrible job, that way she wouldn't come back.
Problem solved.
And if asked they could say that they don't normally cut woman's hair so they have no idea how to do it right, problem solved, not discriminatory, woman then wouldn't go there, plus the hilarity of shaving a railroad track into her hair.
People just don't think outside of the box to solve problems.
That's the true human tragedy here.

This is so ignorant it doesn't even deserve a proper reply.

Is it though? According to the barber's lawyer, they offered to have one of their non-Muslim employees cut her hair and she refused, saying that it had to be the owner. This women chose this barbershop hoping that this would happen so she could stir up a controversy. Plain and simple.

We both know that discrimination is not discrimination. Some discrimination seems to be perfectly acceptable. Someone looking for a roommate or a tenant might post something in a personal ad saying "women only" or "women preferred". How well do you think that might go over if it said "no homosexuals" instead? Clearly there is one group of people that society has no issue with being discriminated against.

I'm glad this happened because it gives me a roadmap for addressing something that's been bugging me lately... I feel discriminated against by virtue of not being allowed to join a women's only gym. I feel like the ratio would work in my favour, which is really the #1 thing I look for in a gym. I will file a complaint on monday.
