I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the type of person who would do something like this, probably doesn't understand how the electoral college works.

I would say because they are a country of action rather than one which over analyzes something until it is no longer relevant.

Ironic as Benjy of the Howard Stern show was going around New York streets asking people if they voted and if they said no he would say "did you know that Obama lost by one vote and your vote would have made the difference?". It was pretty funny as some people had no clue and would feel bad for not voting.

No, any brief analysis of history will show you it is because they were fortunate enough to
a) live on a huge country overflowing with coal, iron ore, oil and all kinds of other commodaties.
b) not get the crap kicked out of them in 2 world wars as they were to far away and mostly stayed out of them.
The US essentially tripped over world leadership and, if things continue as they have been going, has done little with it and will also give it up fairly quickly.

Good for you

I see. So these commodities spontaneously mutated into technological advancements/breakthroughs?

The problem is when you take action when it was never relevant, either in Iraq or in this case.

In my experience the US is an interesting place primarily because of it's population. They have the best of the best in the world and, conversely, the worst of the worst. Yes, access to resources and geographical placement on the globe has helped, but their is certainly a spirit among Americans that you don't find in such large numbers anywhere else in the world. That spirit can be very positive or lurch very much to the negative.
This women isn't one of the worst people on the planet but she is as sharp as a block of air, regardless of her political leanings.

They inherited the culture of science from Europe... and then with a large population and many resources the scientific breakthroughs become a matter of statistics.
However, their puritan streak is causing them to fall behind in areas such as stem cells.

I once read somewhere that New Zealand, Scotland and Israel are currently the largest exporters of technology and research in the world per capita.
A lot of it is probably in fields that are "unexciting" to the general population though, such as; agriculture, vetinarian medicine and core science like physics and chemistry. They aren't out there inventing iThings or doing flashy space things I guess.

Maybe they should stop "acting" and start "over-analyzing" your budget, spending and priorities or soon they will be a country of austerity measures and civil unrest.

Isn't Germany doing really well in that too? I know at least they manufacture a lot of medical and higher technologies. I would imagine they research them as well?
I always thought it should be an area Canada should focus it's economy. Natural resources won't last forever, especially the oil, and all economies needs to grow from that building block anyway.

Germans are great at coming up with the ideas and trip up the execution. Asians are great at perfecting ideas they didn't come up with. I believe it's actually the British that have invented the most common items we use today.
