Back in the day when I worked at a store in the mall a customer told me that she thinks she saw a guy steal a very expensive item, I walked after him (I was working with someone else) and asked him to stop at which point he turned around and looked at me. This was actually a pretty scary moment cause I had no idea what he was going to do, maybe he had a knife? Luckily he just threw the bag he had at me and ran away but it was definitely a "did I bite of more then I can chew" moment.

It's pretty funny that at the time I was doing doing an intro business law course and I knew that legally I couldn't search his bag...

I'm sure he is safer than a pack of 11 wild dogs.

Dont be a hero people, its not worth it. Not for anything. This is what the police are trained to deal with. Let them handle it.
I have to agree. As noble as it is to want to stop a shoplifter, it is always possible that you can get injured and even die. It isn't worth it. Same thing with stopping someone stealing a purse and running away - unless you're in a group and you're all strong enough to take the guy down, don't chase, call the police (mall security in her case).
