I did not know that, I have to start reading more Canadian history. Thanks for sharing.

Not to deny either the enormous influence that Sikhs have had on the history of both the military history of whatever nations they have been a part of, or their present influence in British Columbia, but you have your timing off by a couple of decades.

For the most part Sikhs didn't arrive in BC until around the time of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1896, which was over 20 years after BC joined Confederation, and a decade after the Canadian Pacific railroad was finished. Given that I don't think it would be accurate to say that they were a major factor in BC not becoming part of the US.

And wear a poppy everybody...or more to the point contribute to the Poppy Fund. I send off a green bill every mid October. Giving to the Veterans food bank is also a good thing.

This is the first year that I will not be wearing a poppy.
As I need to carry my Son regularly and no matter how secure I put the poppy in, he is drawn to it and always wants to grab it and start chewing on it. Have I contributed? Yes, but wearing it? Not this year.

This. I have two small daughters and people have given me dirty looks and even commented on my lack of a poppy. Ive grown tired of explaining, and just tell them "I dont need a piece of plastic and a sharp pin on my clothes to respect and honour our veterans."

Get a pin with a backing on it and take the original out. Problem solved.

You're either paranoid or there's another reason why people are giving you dirty looks. I have never seen or heard of people getting dirty looks for not wearing a poppy.

I was in New Orleans a few weeks ago and visited the wonderful WWII museum where they have rebuilt a Higgins boat and I got to meet and talk to Don Summers, who manned a Higgins boat and worked on the rebuild. I love vets and their war stories. I'm wearing my poppy proudly. We need to honour those who put their lives in the line for us.

Not all veterans are old men. A couple of my mid 20's friends are veterans.

The Legion sells poppy centres that actually look nicer and have a safety backing (like a collectible pin does). $5 at the front desk. Problem solved. No kids get hurt and it won't fall off.

Go to the Military Museums! Great learning experience! Talk to the vets! Some of them served during WWII and they still look good!

My Grandfather and Great Uncles fought in WW2 so I try to wear a poppy every year.

Have always had the problem of it slipping off so I usually go through 5 to 10 a year (which isn't a problem as I just gladly donate a couple bucks a few times over)...

but a few years ago someone tipped me off on a great fix:

Break the eraser off a pencil and slide the pin through that behind your shirt.

I haven't lost one since I started doing that. Might not stop a prying little kid but for others it's a neat little tip.

I feed the needle through the lapel, then back out and through the "petal" of the poppy. Never falls off that way.

Bend the pin over, then use a small piece of eraser to cap it.

There's a old vet in the PPCLI area that holds a grudge to this day with the North Koreans because one of their artillery barrages wrecked his comic book.

If you look close in one of the newer displays of the museum you can see two pictures of the old Captain in action.

I just put a small Canada flag pin in it. That way it isn't going anywhere.

By the strictest standards that considered not kosher.

It changes the symbolism

Really? I see people doing that all the time. Alright then, I guess I'll have to chop up an eraser. Thanks for telling me this.
