Don't apply to the same family of companies. That is the only way you are able to be found out.
I.E if you worked for Costco warehouse, then applied for Costco stores, they'll find out. And if you were termed on probation, I wouldn't bother even applying.

Some companies will hire more than they need and consider the three months as an extended interview process. At the end of three months they let go most and keep the ones they want. It is a dirty way of working and is probably rough on morale though.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've sent out a few resumes already and I'm going to an open house downtown and probably Ranstand this afternoon. Hopefully something comes of this. You have no idea how hard it was for me not to lose my #### at my old employer. All I asked was what day I get paid until, thanked them for the opportunity and walked out. (That was hard to suck up my pride let me tell yaa.. )

What type of work are you looking for?
Perhaps you should also post in the "Official "I'm looking for a new job" thread"

Why is that a dirty way of working? How many people take a job and quit within 3 months, because they've applied at a handful of other places and got a callback from the job they really wanted? Tit for tat.

So, the people who don't do as you've described and turn down other offers once they've secured employment are just collateral damage?
The reason why it is a dirty way of working is that it is a greasy way to treat people who have made a commitment to working for you.

GP_Matt and Reaper are right. That is a sleazy way to do business. It's the person doing the hiring that should be vetting each candidate more thoroughly. Throwing a bunch of people at the wall and hoping a few stick is a terrible way to operate a business. Being more selective takes longer but you always end up with better employees in the end.

I had some of the same concerns back when I quit one of my first jobs almost immediately. Good luck, and don't worry. You're right that mentioning school covers up any gap in your resume.

Yeah, it is one thing to let someone go who isn't working out, but hiring someone you don't intend to keep having them work hard for 2.9 months and then let them go because you like someone else better seems greasy to me.

Good on you for going out with dignity. It's definitely better to go that way, you never know who saw that and how it might help you later.

It gets even worse than that.. we were all downtown for a meeting/course and they waited until 3:00 too tell me. Didn't mention it before.. we end at 4:30 so now all of my colleagues had to find out they let me go.

Been there before, it is a ####ty and humbling feeling. You will be better off in the long run. Somebody who doesn't want you is a place that you don't want to be anyway.
Calgary is probably the best place on Earth to be looking for a job anyway. You will be fine. What kind of work do you do? You know how powerful the CP world is...
Hey CP, lets get bluck a new job!

When i asked for a reason as to why they let me go they basically could not even give me a straightforward answer.. anyways I'd rather not go into that part..
Few questions
1. Do I have to list this job on my resume?
2. If a potential employer pulls up my sin number, will they see this job on there?
3. How good are temp agencies in finding a position? I need something to tie me over until I graduate in April. I have 4 classes left until I complete my degree and i'm taking 2 classes at night Wed/Thurs and intend too next semester as well as to allow myself to hold down a full time job.
4. What about background checks? Will this show this job on there?
Appreciate any comments/opinions
Thanks
Bluck.

You mentioned you were taking courses during this time. Does your school offer any career counselling? When I was going to the U of C, Career Services had resume workshops and related counselling available free of charge. Look into something like that. Explaining oddities in your resume is a question that comes up a lot. They should be able to help you deal with this situation in your next job interview.

Best advice I ever got was to identify the companies you're interested in working for, do some research to find out the highest-ranking local person you can find, and send them a nice letter and your resume. It bypasses HR, shows them you've done some research, and flatters the person. That's how I started my career.

Someone said to not bother with temp agencies
I think they are a good source and a temp job could lead to something permanent

If you do not want to declare this job on your resume I doubt you'll have a problem. But I would suggest you Google yourself just in case there is some reference out there connecting you with your past company. Lots of employers Google prospective employees and if your Facebook profile is public, update your security settings as a minimum.
edit: Oh, and good luck.

I moved from BC to Ontario 2 years ago (changed companies) and still come across people that I worked with back in BC. People move around a lot. Two guys that I used to work with, and one that worked for a competing company that I dealt with, now work for clients that I have now, and two now work for the same company I do, but in different cities.
You really have to be careful not to burn bridges.
