Did that actually happen? I remember hearing the same thing as a kid (the cone balloon was my favourite by far) but the story is the type of childhood lore that might or might not actually be true AFAIK now.
I used to live in Hawkwood when that was where the city ended, and the balloons would often land just there by my house. I remember watching them come down and going over to see them land. Hadn't really thought of them again until this thread, but now that it's been mentioned, I can't remember the last time I saw one in the sky. I remember counting 14 once upon a time.
Would like to give it a go someday, but like others have said, it seems these things have all sorts of issues actually getting off the ground. Probably some kind of nanny-stating going on.
