There was a Portuguese guy at work that called me Caker once. I thought he was calling me fat, referring to my eating a lot of cake, but he explained that it's a racial slur used against white people. I was actually then less offended.

How can ignorance not be an acceptable defense? I've always wrestled with this. Even the whole "court of law" thing. I mean, seriously. It's like the lady in Nanaimo last month who was given a ticket, while sitting at her desk at work, for parking her car and leaving the window rolled down. Apparently, that's against the law, and the cop actually walked into her office and tried to give her a ticket for it.

It turns out the whole floor wigged out about what they not only thought was a moronic law, but also the fact that this guy was seriously trying to enforce it. He relented on the ticket and just gave her a warning instead.

I get that it's our responsibility to inform ourselves, but there has to be a reasonable level of understanding. I'm not a lawyer, I didn't study the law. In fact, I have not taken one signal law-related course ever in my life. Am I really expected to know every little thing I'm allowed or not allowed to do, other than the obvious ones (or the moral ones)?

Was that lady really supposed to know that it's illegal to park her OWN car with her OWN window rolled down? Would she not have been able to walk into a courtroom and say, "Really, Your Honor? I was really supposed to know that I'm not allowed to roll my window down when I park my own car in my own private parking space outside of my own office?" "What about inside my garage? Have the Police been checking people's garages all this time for illegally rolled down windows, and I'm the only person on the planet who hasn't noticed this?"

To that end, I have no idea if this guy really knew about the chinese thing or not. I have to imagine there aren't a lot of chinese people living in Virginia, where he's from. In fact, the 2010 Census for Virginia Beach says that only 0.5% of their population is chinese.

Because the history of white people is different from the history of other races.

Probably because you guys have never faced discrimination based on the colour of your skin like other races. Don't blame us for the double standards, blame your ancestors.

Did you seriously just compare a racial slur that is pretty much universally known with an incredibly obscure law? And more importantly, did you just take 5 paragraphs to do it?

I don't know, white people face discrimination; I face discrimination here in the GTA from Chinese people. They won't even let you into certain restaurants here unless you're Asian.

But white people, as a whole, have never faced institutionalized discrimination on an industrial level like other races have, mostly due to white people. Names like honkey and cracker might elicit a more visceral response if white people had ever been basically imported and enslaved to build a railway across a country, for instance.

Could be a fan of 'All in the family'. Archie Bunker threw that saying around on the show back then.

My mistake, what you said was what I meant to say. You said it much better than me. It has to do with all the colonial rule back in the days where races of colour were treated like second class citizens, sold into slavery, forced to fight wars for their colonial masters, etc.

Yeah, from what I know the word eskimo was a pejorative term used by the Cree. I won't say what I've heard it means but they didn't like each other.

I'm guessing my wife's family is oblivious to its origin as most of them happily refer to themselves as Eskimos.

Of course, they are a couple of generations from living north of the Arctic Circle too.

Do you know what white people hate? Being called a racist. White people flip out when you call them a racist. "Racist" is the N-word for white people. Cracker didn't work. Honky didn't work.

Hey if the word no longer has any power that's great.

Nope. I was discussing the concept of "ignorance is no excuse." Someone else mentioned it earlier in the thread, and as it's something that I have often questioned, I took this opportunity to raise the issue.

In both events, the one I mentioned from last month and the one being discussed in this thread, ignorance was used as a defence - thus, my "in" for raising the issue I wanted to discuss.

My post was meant to move the discussion beyond the "he's a stupid fathead" that was prevalent in this thread.

Until we're able to emotionally detach ourselves from topics such as these, and be able to treat the discussion itself in a trivial manner, the process of moving forward is a pipe dream. Take two people conversing about the weather as an example. Both can clearly have their own opinions about whether the day is too hot or too cold, with neither person getting bent out of shape. However, in all our years of claiming "racial progress" we still can't talk about the real issues behind an action, without outlandish hyperbole and conjecture.

To me, the real issue isn't whether or not he said something bad, or if he should have said it at all... The real issue is whether or not a guy who grew up in a State with an overall Chinese population ratio of 0.5% was even responsible for knowing that he wasn't supposed to say it.

Certain segments of white people have been subjected to discrimination, until recently. For example the physically disabled were called "cripples", and the mentally challenged were called "######s". Even today, there are white minorities that are referred to in derogatory terms like "whitetrash", "trailertrash", etc.

Years ago my wife was subjected to discrimination in Quebec for speaking English. When she went to talk to a sales lady in a mall in St. Bruno, the lady turned her back on her. Also, when we parked at the Chatiau Laurier Hotel in Quebec City, we were the only car ticketed in a long line of parked cars. We haven't been back to Quebec since.
