Just to be clear...and now I'm drunk...but where does it say exactly this? Is this from some wikipedia entry I haven't read?

I'm really having a hard time processing what I perceive as stupidity in this article.

I realize this is stupid and pointless, but I feel really out of the loop/clueless/like I'm missing something.

You did miss it, but not in this article. This article assumes some background knowledge of the subject to create a nerdy little in joke. As was pointed out by other posters, previous estimates have included calculations of the amount of mass-equivalent energy required to be equivalent to things like the the mass if a few suns, or more recently, the mass of Jupiter. The 'joke' being made is in reference to that. The author is saying, 'a few thousand pounds is a lot less than say the mass of Jupiter', not because the mass of Jupiter and a few thousand pounds are in any way in the same order of mass, but to compare the results of current thinking with previously publicized estimates of the energy requirements.
That's the point you're missing.

God we all know your really smart, but you may get your point across better if you weren't such a colossal dick.

The few times you poke your head out is to insult an idea or person. The dumb thing is usually you know what your talking about, but maybe people wouldn't be so scared of things they didn't know if there weren't people like you putting them down the whole time.

Instead next time, engage someones interest or help them out with the science Mr Phd. We could use more people interested in the nuts and bolts.

It's saying a thousand pounds is "considerably less" than Jupiter. Why even compare it to a planet? They're talking about a mass similar to that of an F-150.

Am I missing some famous quote about Jupiter providing warp speed energy or something?

This may explain it better for you. Originally posted in the ongoing science thread, where we were discussing this for the last few days.

There is a second article I re-posted earlier as well from Cowperson. Hope that helps.

God bless.
