Its really nothing special, but Coles notes:
Before they are able to tie us up, I attack and attempt to neutralize the weapon as best as possible, even to my own detriment.
Then at the same time she beats the living #### out of them. We have some 'self defense' weapons placed strategically around the home to facilitate this.
The real key, imho, is that she knows it will happen and she knows it will happen at a specific time, so she is ready to act. If she didn't, any time I spent in my initial assault would be wasted.

I'm sorry, but all I could picture here was you feebly flailing away and your wife throwing a shoe at someone. I have no idea why, that's just all that's coming to me.

Would a tennis racquet be a good weapon?
I used to think a club with long nails and screws through it. but after one hit it might get stuck to the attacker and you would lose the weapon.

Think - fireplace poker, baseball bat etc.
I think your best bet in a case like this is to stun or knock the guy put long enough to disarm him. You don't want to have to get super close to him either.
Who knows though, I am not an expert, just a paranoid nutjub.
As for the shoe comment, i do see the humor in the imagery, somehow I just don't see that happening. Mrs Rathji is strong enough that anyone threatening our kids like that would be in a world of hurt pretty fast.
Ok, chances are I would still just be flailing around feebly.

Bolts with nuts on them through baseball bats. The bolts don't get stuck in an attacker and the metal is sufficient enough for breaking skin to go with the impact.

You're all thinking small time with your "weapons." Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats a burlap sack full of door knobs.
In all seriousness though, I feel sorry for the family. I can't imagine how horrible that was for them.

So essentially the plan is to have your wife save you with a piece of furniture.
Jean Chretien, is that you?

The biggest self defense mistake by far here was made by the mother. Now I know the reasoning behind co-operating with the attacker was because 'he had a gun', but really, once you agree to do anything an attacker asks you to do, you are just playing into their hands. It's one of the first things they tell women in self defense classes, and it's good for anyone really. Gun or no gun, knife or no knife, don't go with the attacker. Don't make anything easier for them. Do you really think they are going to be nicer to you if you do do what they say? They say, 'get in the car or I'll shoot you', well what do you think they will do after they get you in the car? Or in the house? Or tied up?
The mother agreeing to tie up the family was the dumbest part and really the story would have probably been much different otherwise. They probably would have gotten to a part to where they could overpower him much sooner.
I mean they were able to overpower him while tied up and the father had been stabbed!
A horrible, horrible story, but could have been much different. I guess that's one of the morals, don't let fear do your thinking for you. If you're ever attacked you should fight, run, (order can go either way depending on the situation, and sometimes you have to do one to get the opportunity to do the other) and try to get to as visible or public place as you can. Go as wild kingdom as you can, trust your instincts.
But never go along with the attacker.
(Now before everyone tries to come up with what if scenarios, there might be certain circumstances especially if the attacker is known to you where talking to them and placating them may be your best opportunity, but I'm talking about random violence. And really, it's good advice in most scenarios anyway.)

That's pretty much the logic behind my 'plan'. Go along with them to a point, but not to the point where you severely restrict your options (getting tied up). I came to this conclusion after reading about Dennis Rader (The BTK Killer), which I know is an extreme example.

Yeah I thought that may be the kind of thing you were thinking about.
You're odds in fighting back may not be great, but they are infinitely better than if you do nothing, or let your fear take you.

Gunn wrapped up a three-day sentencing hearing Thursday by saying the accused should only be sentenced to 12 years in prison for the October 2010 ambush in North Kildonan. He told provincial court Judge Rob Finlayson it's much too early for society to give up on his client.
"I certainly understand the desire for vengeance in this case. But it has no place in the justice system," said Gunn. "A true measure of a just society is the manner in which we treat those least deserving of our empathy. It's the manner in which we treat the most wretched that makes Canada a great country."
Finlayson reserved his decision until Oct. 1.

I feel really bad for this family. They're probably going to be screwed up for life, but there's no way I open a door for some stranger that time of night. And, if for some reason I had to, I'd at least make sure I have a chain lock or something so I just have to peep out.
That being said, it was a young teenager that opened the door, and this is Canada, not the Bronx, and most people would hardly expect something like this happening.
