I'll throw out Broken Social Scene, Muse, Stars, Death Cab For Cutie, As The Poets Affirm, William Shatner, Ben Folds, Alexisonfire, Common, Simon and Garfunkel, PJ Harvey, NIN.. just to name a few
|
Shatner? I mean Shatner.... a what?
|
Shatner's newest album "Has Been" was produced by Ben Folds, it's actually rediculously good! ESPECIALLY The cover of Pulp's "Common People" Check it out and you'll be suprised.
|
Joe Jackson makes that song.
|
I'd argue that Bill yelling out "Yeah and the chip stains grease will come out in the wash" does.. but that's just my opinion.. [/b][/quote]
I have to admit the shatner "common people" was good!!!
I too was a doubter at first, but it is strangly addictive.

Thanks Ro!
A friend of mine wouldn't stop talking about him so I thought I'd check it out. I was really impressed! He also sent me some Little Brother and J-Live which I enjoyed..
|
I think your pal and I have similar tastes in hip hop...if I was forced to pick my top 5 artists, all 3 of those picks would be in there.
J-Live and Little Brother both have LPs dropping later this ummer, so make sure to check them out. I just read at HHS today that critics are already touting LB's "The Minstrel Show" as "incredible" and "the album of the year."
I will check out Pocket Dwellers. Thanks for the heads-up.

Same with Desaparecidos. Another of Connor Oberst's side projects with a bit more punky edge than Bright Eyes.
I recommend most Saddle Creek records artists now. A good cd is the "Saddle Creek 50" that has a few songs from many different bands on that label such as...Bright Eyes, Cursive, The Faint, Good Life, Desaparecidos, Now It's Overhead, etc...
A nice compilation that exposes a number of good bands.
And they are based out of Omaha. Now I can make a trip there to see Bright Eyes and a Knights game. Would be good fun.

That's just eerie, flames for life list is very similar to what's on my mp3 player right now.
The Killers, Three Doors Down, Talib Kweli(can't go wrong with any of this albums), Common(seems anything he relases is very good in my books), Coldplay, Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def......
And now based on kermit/Ro's post I will have to go check out Little Brother and J-Live and Pocket Dwellers.

mmm currently in my new pile:
new White strips, coldplay, foo fighters, weezer, Shoskatovich (classical), best of the pixies, best of hank williams, Astrix (goa-psy trance), new system of a down, and MoS Chillout 7.
I gotta stop listening to Hank Williams, makes me wanna start singing twangy country music everywhere... (and my students don't like it..)

Can't wait for the new Pelican. Listened to their e-card and was definitely excited. Haven't listened to my Horse the Band album in a while... might have to give it a spin here. I still need to grab the Red Sparowes disc along with the Jesu self-titled. I hear the Sparowes being compared to GSYBE! and Mogwai a bit. Would you say that is a fair comparison?
As far as stuff I am listening to in the last week or so: latest Clutch, Extol, Foo, Isis - remixes, Porcupine Tree, System of a Down, White Stripes, Dinosaur Jr "Where You Been", Failure "Fantastic Planet", etc., etc.

Right now I'm listening to this slightly gimmicky but still wonderful Nouvelle Vague album, which is various 80s new wave and punk songs interpretted by Bossa Nova singers. Making Plans for Nigel, Stop the World, A Forest, Just Can't Get Enough... a lot of great covers on it.

Since you like Arcade Fire and Metric, I'll second the recommendations for Broken Social Scene and Stars.
And yes, the Shatner album is bloody brilliant. Easily my favourity album of 2004.

Opeth
It's the only way to fly.
Seriously though, if you're into metal, download or pick up an album like "My Arms, Your Hearse", "Blackwater Park", or "Still Life" by Opeth and give it 5-7 listens. I would be surprised if you weren't converted.
Probably my favourite band. The vocals throw some people off though but musically they are fataing geniuses.

This is ripped straight from HF, from Handsome B. Wonderful. Some really good, some not so much. The theme of the thread is best albums of 2005.
http://www.hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=147878
1. Andrew Bird- Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs, Righteous Babe, February 8
Talk about out of nowhere. Andrew Bird has toiled around in obscurity for years but even his biggest fans could not have foreseen the unbelievable quality of this album. The human body should not be able to produce sounds this beautiful.
Best Song: Nervous Tic Motion Of The Head To The Left
2. Sufjan Stevens- Illinois, Asthmatic Kitty, July 5(pre-release was leaked back in March)
Sufjan Stevens is set to make it into my top 20 albums of the year list for the third year in a row(Seven Swans was 12 last year, Michigan 8 in 2003). If not for the absolute jaw dropping quality of the Mysterious Production of Eggs this would be a runaway winner. Phenomenal.
Best Song: Come On! Feel the Illinoise!
3. The Decemberists- Picaresque, Kill Rock Stars, March 22
The Decemberists also are a recurring theme in my top album lists with Castaways and Cutouts appearing in my list in 2003. The Decemberists nailed probably their biggest issue with consistency in Picaresque. Every song on the album is simply fantastic including 3 of my top 10 for the year.
Best Song: The Mariner's Revenge Song
4. Architecture in Helsinki- In Case We Die, Bar None, April 12
The best way to describe Architecture in Helsinki is two parts Fiery Furnaces and one part Arcade Fire. Now if that's not a winning combination I don't know what is.
Best Song: Maybe You Can Owe Me
5. The Boy Least Likely To, The Best Party Ever, Import Only
Soft, fuzzy, and sickeningly cute are three words that can describe this album. The Boy Least Likely To walk a very dangerous line brilliantly. One of the biggest surprises of the year...now if only the damn album would come out stateside.
Best Song: Paper Cuts
6. The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band- Horses In The Sky, Constellation, March 22
Sure there's only six songs on the album but the shortest one clocks in at 6:38. This album certainly is not for everyone, it's an acquired taste that just gets better with every go around. God Bless Our Dead Marines is one of the best songs I've heard this year, which isn't going to be a rare feat in this list considering this is, after all, the best of the best so far...but you won't find many songs 11:44 in length getting that compliment. Just an absolutely amazing song.
Best Song: God Bless Our Dead Marines
7. The Fiery Furnaces- EP, Sanctuary, January 11
This isn't right. The brilliantly(sarcasm) named EP from The Fiery Furnaces is like any other EP out there. Re-issues of older songs and scraps that were cut from previous albums...but EP may actually be better than their phenomenal Blueberry Boat album which made my top 10 list last year.
Best Song: Here Comes The Summer
8. Of Montreal- Sunlandic Twins, Polyvinyl, April 12
The reception for Sunlandic Twins is a vastly varying one. Some call it a disgrace to the band while others call it their best work, there seems to be very little in terms of a middle ground. Personally I absolutely love it, some of their best work to date is found in it.
Best Song: Oslo In The Summertime
9. Caribou- The Milk Of Human Kindness, Domino, May 3
One of those albums that will either be loved by it's listeners or hated with almost no middle grounds. Caribou, formerly known as Manitoba, offer up some of the weirdest, unique, and strangely compelling songs of the year with The Milk Of Human Kindness. Just don't expect much in the form of vocals as the bulk of it is instrumental.
Best Song: Pelican Narrows
10. Bright Eyes- I?m Wide Awake, It?s Morning, Saddle Creek, January 25
On January 25th the then 24 year-old Conor Oberst released two albums simultaneously, the slow, country-esque I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and the electric Digital Ash In A Digital Urn. Both are fantastic albums, I'm Wide Awake being more so, and both are so completely different. I'm Wide Awake is the more refined of the two and is stronger throughout.
Best Song: Road To Joy
11. Bonnie "Prince" Billy & Matt Sweeney- Superwolf, Drag City, January 25
Will Oldham?s best work since the classic 1999 ? See a Darkness.? The best collaborated effort I?ve heard in quite a while.
Best Song: My Home Is The Sea
12. Sleater-Kinney- The Woods, Sub Pop, May 24
Punk?s leading ladies best work in years is also their first album released on a label other than Kill Rock Stars for the first time since 1995.
Best Song: Let?s Call It Love
13. Stephen Malkmus- Face The Truth, Matador, May 24
Face The Truth represents Malkmus?s best work since his departure from the legendary Pavement. While not up to Slanted & Enchanted levels of greatness Face The Truth is one hell of a record.
Best Song: Pencil Rot
14. Nic Armstrong & The Thieves- The Greatest White Liar, New West, March 8
One of those albums that just comes out of nowhere to really surprise you. This is purebred unadultered rock and roll.
Best Song: Broken Neck Blues
15. Beck- Guero, Geffen, March 29
To put it simply this is Beck?s best work since Odelay IMO.
Best Song: E-Pro

Well, when I was in my metal groove, your parents probably didn't even know each other yet!! So take this with a grain of salt... "metal" in my generation may not be the "metal" of yours....
My alltime favourite album is without doubt, the soundtrack from Heavy Metal. Some truly classic songs. The soundtrack from Heavy Metal 2000 may entice you too... more current and probably some tracks from bands you know (Pantera, System of a Down, Days of the New, Queen of the Stone Age, etc), but have not heard yet.
As for metal bands of my era, the standouts are obviously the likes of AC/DC, Judas Priest, the Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, etc. But perhaps you have not stumbled upon groups like Accept ("Metal Heart" is a cool album), Cinderella ("Night Songs"), Fastway, ("Fastway"), Angel City ("Face to Face"), Krokus ("Stayed Awake All Night", a best of..) and Ratt ("Invasion of Your Privacy", a bit more pop-ish). Although it is likely you already have heard some of those, if you haven't heard the others, they are worth checking into.... old school metal-wise.

Wow.
It's really odd to find someone into stuff like Kataklysm and Dimmu Borgir, but they haven't heard Opeth. Best metal band on the planet - can't wait for their new CD in August.
I'm really digging a lot of these metalcore bands (the good ones, not crap like Atreyu). Darkest Hour's new CD is great, Killswitch Engage is very good ("Alive or Just Breathing" is clearly their best), Haste the Day, hopesfall, and the kings of the genre - Unearth.
But back to the original question...I'd recommend The Faint, Dredg, Coheed & Cambria, Death Cab For Cutie, Sunny Day Real Estate (REAL emo ), Hot Water Music, and Mewithoutyou.

I think this guy's list is pretty close to my own pics, but this album in particular is of interest: I haven't picked it up yet, but Stevens has announced that he intends to record an album about every state in the US. Michigan was brilliant, and it sounds like Illinois is just as good. It's an impressive endeavor just to attempt, though. How many years is that going to take?
