I wonder if he knows that Common is one of the stars of Hell on Wheels, which is filmed in Southern Alberta?

Oh, the humanity! He's lucky he made it back to safety of Kalamazoo, where your chances of becoming a victim of crime are 1 in 102: http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/mi/kalamazoo/crime/ (although, that stat might give us an understanding of his mindset).

. . . Because incidents like this in Michigan require a citizen to pull out a hand-gun?

Probably just two young kids having a bit too much to drink or something. The chances of a violent incident were probably slim to none.

This man's attitude towards simple encounters scares the piss out of me. I would hate to think what a spare change request would get you - probably 10 gunshots, a bat beatdown, and a lawsuit saturated with punitive damages to the "attacker" for emotional trauma.

And I'm pretty sure they have more aggressive people in Michigan. There are parts of Detroit that are just as bad (if not worse) than places in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Lacking a loaded Magnum, he resorted to a weapon of last resort, Canadian Politeness . . . . and blew them away.

In all seriousness, if the two thugs had genuine ill-intent, I don't think an "excuse me" with a crafty sidestep would be enough to dissuade them. That's where his story breaks down.

Nose Hill was a beautiful place to walk, ride and run . . . . until they paved the paths and let the riff-raff in.

That's only for a victim of violent crime. Overall your chances are 1/17 to be a victim of crime in general.

It's just a different mindset I guess. I'm sure we have all been in uncomfortable situations, from hoodlums staring at us, to some Bums asking for money, to dealing with idiots on the train, and we've all resolved the situation without out and out violence. Many "beggers" use small talk as a prelude to asking for money, we all feel threatend in different ways. I could just never imagine pulling a gun out, with intent to blow someone away.

Looks like it has struck a chord with Calgarians a bit:

http://news.google.ca/news/url?sa=t&...8%2Fstory.html

The part Wawra didn't tell us was that the two men were wearing pink sleeveless tank tops, tight jean shorts and sporting pink boas and glitter, holding each others hands and waving feathers around.

Or was it they were two Newfies with an affinity for chatter?

Possibly two recently immigrated Sikhs practicing their English?

No, definitely two gruff-looking transients looking to pick a fight and/or molest his wife. That's definitely it.
