Sorry my post is late to the party but as a collector and seller of hockey cards for many years (as a hobby) I thought I could throw some info the OP's way too....
The vast majority of rookie cards printed today are not printed thousands of times but have very limited production runs. There was a time for sure in 90's through to the early 00's that this wasn't the case and most rookie cards from that period are pretty much worthless. Too bad when cards for guys like Jagr are worth like $1. Todays are a different story though, even the base sets from upper deck limit production runs on their rookie cards, which is why you will only get 4-5 rookie cards per box or so.
If your going to collect the older cards (from the 80's and earlier) ebay will likely be your best friend but just beware, older cards are easy to counterfeit and there is a lot of that on ebay. Do your homework on the seller before purchasing any larger ticket items. I have sold 100's of hockey cards on ebay and to be honest, people pay more for the newer cards than the older ones. Certainly you can get good money for a gretzky rookie but you will get 10x more for a high end sydney crosby.
Another way to get a good deal is to be patient. When the latest cards come out that feature the star rookies, they are always overpriced on ebay. Things almost always settle down, for instance, people were paying $80-100 for Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle rookie cards in their rookie year, you can now get the same cards for $20-30 off of ebay. I mostly collect Rookie cards but have some other pretty cool ones that I like to keep, and some good flames stuff. I do have an autographed Sydney Crosby card from his second year where only 10 of them were made, the only other one I've seen on ebay sold for $1750...to put it in perspective, you can get 3 Wayne Gretzky's for that price.
There are sites out there as well where people will trade cards, and those sites are great as it can save you a lot of money. Not sure if I'm allowed to mention other sites on here but if not, PM me and I can give you the info. Once you have some cards for trade, you can really build up your collection in a hurry with these sites...and again, save a bunch of cash.
