The only thing truly missing from CTV's coverage is Ron McLean. The guy is one of the best hosts in the broadcasting game, second to none. When he opens his mouths and starts giving his opinon I want to beat the poop out of him... but as a host.. one of the best.
CTV misses an anchor to bring all the coverage together, it's what CBC has. They know how to tell a story.
I prefer Brian Williams personally, but MacLean is no slouch either
but the thought of Hughson calling the gold medal game in hockey makes me ill.
Ugh. Count me among the disappointed, CTV/TSN does such a good job with this. Sad to see the world's premier sporting event sent to a second rate broadcaster.
Like this year with Sportsnet?

I expect they'll pass some coverage off to other stations. For Beijing, TSN had 150 hours of coverage and I think we'll see something similar. At least I hope so.
So basically, it'll be the same as a consortium bid, except in terms of how the accounting is done?
Well I'll take some solace in the fact that while TSN actually has sporting events I watch during the Summer and Winter, all CBC has going for it is HNIC which is off during the Summer games anyway. So instead of sacrificing the CFL, NFL, MLB, or other coverage on TSN we get the best of both worlds. That is of course if you don't care about missing quality CBC programming like Da Vinci's Inquest, Da Vinci's City Hall, or the many other publicly funded shows featuring Da Vinci.
Although the variety of coverage TSN/CTV has been great; I don't even need to bother watching Sportsnet. So CBC will need a find a way to expand their coverage without locating events to channels no one has.
I also wonder if this has anything to do with the NHL and NBA looking to take themselves out of the games. In the NHL's case it might not be in TSN's best interest to show the Olympics over 17 days if the NHL is still running.

Glad to hear this. CTV doesn't have the presence and atmosphere that CBC can pull off. CTV just feels like they slot in anyone who's available to cover a sport. I want to hear stories and inside knowledge....not twitter feeds.
Maybe others hate him, but I'll take Brian Williams over Jennifer Hedger any day.

I'm ok with this for the most part. I too really enjoy Brian Williams - he's synonymous with the Olympics in my mind, having grown up with him hosting the games. But I generally don't have a lot good to say about the on-air talent CTV has provided. Joanne Malar is flat out awful doing commentary for swimming - not having Byron MacDonald is a huge miss. Was nice to hear Paul Romanuk's voice on air again though.
We'll have to see what CBC comes up with for broadcasting; I don't get how they'd jump on with TSN since CBC just dissolved their partnership with Bell to make the bid. You'd think they would have retained the partnership if they were going to split coverage anyways.
CTV never wanted to cover the Olympics long-term. They just wanted Vancouver 2010. The next time a Canadian city hosts the Olympics, I'd wager a pretty good guess they'll try and acquire those rights as well. From what I've read and heard CTV is losing money to broadcast the Games.

You must not have watched any swimming at all. Just god awful I'm recording NBC to watch it.
Not sure who CTV has lineup for Track and Field but i highly doubt they can touch CBCs commentators. Although Mark Lee is an ass for calling hockey games, he is an excellent track and field commentator.

Yeah, it might be nice to have an Olympics that isn't a giant ad for phones.

CBC didn't dissolve the partnership, the IOC rejected it in an attempt to get competing bids.

Mark Lee replaced the legendary Don Wittman for track and field and did very well.
CTV track and field will be Gord Miller, Michael Smith & Dave Moorcroft.
