I wouldn't say that someone with dementia wandering away is unrelated to the reason that they were admitted - in fact it is likely closely associated with the reason that they were admitted. As for the specifics of the case no one at the current time can really go into any details about them, was the guy on a pass? Did he run away from the program? Did they look for the guy? Who knows but the hospital is literally steps away from the reservoir so it isn't inconceivable that someone could run away due to confusion, fall down the hill into the water and drown.

As for choking on food most meals in mental health units are done in community settings such as large dining areas as per Milieu Therapy so I am thinking that there may be more information to come out at least before we start calling some people to be fired.

Then use proper phrases, they are kept on a secure unit. It doesn't show them any dignity as people to say that they are locked up.

The results may be the same in that they are not able to leave, the rationales are completely different as to why though. Patients are kept on a secure mental health unit, prisoners are locked up.

To be fair I said this in an earlier post " I've volunteered in a number of LTC facilities where magnetic doors are installed in certains wings of the unit to prevent demtia people from walking away". That being said your explanation better describes the situation - thank you

Good thing you mentioned it.

Those idiots who work for the hospital probably hadn't thought of it yet, so nothing like that was in place.

In fact, I would wager that at a facility run with such inefficiencies as the Rockyview, they likely house them by stacking rolls of quarters and loonies on top of each other in the middle of the parking lot. The rely on the principle that if a dementia patient can't make change for $20, then they can't get out into the wild.

Two patients who went missing from the Rockyview Hospital have been found but critics are now putting the spotlight on the bigger issue of dementia care.

Robert Johnson, 71, went missing from the Rockyview Hospital about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Johnson suffers from dementia and was found downtown on Wednesday afternoon and returned to the hospital.

Another patient also wandered away from the care facility on Wednesday morning.

Maybe this is one person's fault. Or maybe it's a sign of a bigger problem. Under staffing? Under training? I know I'm a bit jaded with the state of the Alberta Health Care system. But, you know, we better fire someone, just to make sure.

"Fire someone" doesn't mean fire a nurse necessarily. Someone put the policies, training procedures, security measures, staffing levels...

Too many free rides on this kind of thing. This is two fatalities. Two people's family members. If you are in health care and responsible for preventable deaths? See yah.
