I guess when you're using Rush as your yardstick for that comparison, it works. But the Foo first came out back in 1994. As a child, anything older than ten years was in the range of 'old people music' to me.
I guess it depends how you define newer. He likely meant newer, as in they're putting out relevant music today, and was reffering to bands that aren't producing hits, or anything close to their hayday, as "old" bands.

I brought it up because i feel sorry for the kid, considering all he has gone through. He for sure will be made fun of. My friend Jayson still hates his parents for it.

Oh and i don't think any of us are ridiculing the kid! It isn't his fault.

I compared the name to a Mortal Kombat character, I'm just having some fun with it. I actually don't care how someone's name is spelled.

So you feel sorry for him because you think he is going to be made fun of, so your solution is to make fun of him?

Do you really think THIS kid is going to have any issues with how his name is spelled?

I have a friend named Jayson as well, and I have never ever heard him complain about it. Although maybe that has more to do with the people around him than anything else.

Back on topic. The kid has sick talent, and he is lucky to have it recognized so early in life, and lucky to have parents that will let him flourish with.

Oddly Enough, my wife hates Video Games, but I think this was her inspiration for wanting it to spell it this way, and we do call him Jax as a nickname, along with Jak Jak (From The Incredibles)

I heard a Comedian once who summed it up like this: Fact is, the kid will go through life telling people they've spelled his name wrong all the time, when in fact it was his parents who spelled his name wrong to begin with.

I guess with a last name like Smith though it is probably not a bad idea to mix up the first name a little. It could avoid major problems down the road, or perhaps create some, I don't really know.

Came into thread hoping to see parents ridiculed for ridiculous naming of their child, left satisfied! Thanks CP!

The name Jaxon is lame, and no your son doesn't stand out because of his personality.

Cool drummer kid though.

I wish I had this kids talent. Hopefully he continues to nurture it properly. Cool story and it's nice to see him get some international recognition.

In terms of the 'unique' names issue... I find it's a bit of a mob mentality thing, like how if you put a line of yellow paint on a chicken it will get plucked to death by other chickens just for being different. Is it really that big of a deal if he has a non-Biblical first name?

And yes his son likely does stand out because of his personality as most people do.

Pretty sure everyone's just ridiculing the parents.

Well deserved as well.

Jaxon is like an 8/10 terrible name though...add in an extra "x" and you get a 10/10 terrible name...or a pornstar.

If Jaxon doesn't like his name when he's older, he's more than entitled to change it. It's allowed.

This thread has gone off the rails.

The kid is seven.
The kid has an amazing gift.
The kid will get international attention for this gift.
The kid is a Calgarian and that should be celebrated.

Some of the comments in here about his name are ridiculous and you need to give your head a shake. Want to know why few sports broadcasters post here? Read the stupid comments in this thread. The kid is SEVEN for crying out loud.
