If it happens I hope I'm on one of the older cars with the open windows and it stops in a tunnel. Nice a cool down there.
One of those small pleasures of riding a packed over heated train in the summer is that moment when it enters a tunnel and a cool breeze sweeps into the train.

@nenshi: Just spoke with ENMAX. Crisis resolved for now, power outages finished. Please conserve power as best you can during this heat. #YYC

I need a better alarm clock. Whelp.

Use your cell phone. Relying on an alarm clock plugged into the wall is so last century.

Would have been helpful if they could have listed the areas that would be affected on their website .... or maybe it doesn't work that way?

So that's what constitutes a crisis these days? We've got it pretty good.

I'm just taking a stab in the dark, but I suspect something like that would cause more problems than it solves. Remember the big stink raised over the boil water advisory? I'm thinking "here's a list of neighbourhoods that will be effected and when" would simply cause more problems than it solves. (EG: "Rabble Rabble how come the rich didn't lose power! Rabble Rabble Enmax's board member didn't lose power at their store & their competition did! Rabble Rabble!")
Losing power unannounced is certainly a hassle, but honestly the rotating black outs with the announcement that "it's only 30 minutes" seems like a pretty reasonable way to handle things.

I suppose if people knew a blackout was coming they'd probably crank the AC and run all their appliances right before also.

Or you know, not open the fridge, freezer, maybe save the work you're doing on your desktop. Open the garage so you can get out of the house (if you're an older person that can't figure it out). Plenty of good reasons to let people know in advance.
Someone said MRU? Really, they rolled a blackout through a university, with a pool, gym, etc. people doing work. Seems a little dangerous.

When I lived out in the country, we had power outages on a regular basis. So much so, that I had an emergency generator system. I usually wouldn't go out and start the generator until the power was out for more than 15 minutes. Of course, it always went out when it was -20 deg C with a blizzard outside.

It's half an hour... all of those won't be a problem except saving your work. Get a UPS if it's that critical. Giving advance warning for rolling blackouts which are constantly moving around to shed load, depending on load balancing? Don't see how that's possible.

Were there specific circumstances that required the rolling blackouts, or does this point to larger capacity/distribution issues with the grid in Alberta? Are we going to see this happen any time the temperature is a bit above normal?

A couple days of summer temps and we are in a heat wave? Rolling blackouts...has the city overgrown the power supply? Or is it economics?

I'd guess that this had to be close to a worst case scenario with the Stampede on and all the extra people in town. Every hotel room booked, the grounds sucking huge power, etc.

There was a rep from Enmax on QR late this afternoon. It was an Alberta wide issue.
She explained part of what brought this about is the fact that there are 4 generation plants that are currently down. That coupled with overall increase necessitated having to distribute accordingly.

Maybe it's time for some to get a generator? I know I'm in the process of getting a whole home generator for my house that will automatically come on in the event of power outage or another tornado issue that keeps us in the dark for a few weeks.
I know you guys aren't use to the heat but with the long hot summers down here I cant invision the people that don't have ac in their homes.

Found this on Global.

AESO says six generators went down Monday morning at roughly the same time, for various technical reasons.
|
So 6 were down in the AM and 4 still down at 4:30 'ish when I heard the rep on radio.
I wonder how many generation plants we have in Alberta and is this type of "technical" issue common?
