So someone says "scrimped and saved for years" and everyone assumes massive debt? Gotcha.

I just kinda think, it's his yard, why can't he do what he wants? He's within his rights, as he checked with the county.
Besides, if he follows quite time rules, how is going to bother the neighbours?

They believe it will lower property values. Yeah, maybe if this neighborhood was in Florida. It's ####ing Edmonton, it'll probably increase property values. They should be thanking him.

We're supposed to have sympathy for this lady? Like, why tell us you scrimped and saved for years when you could have bought something cheaper like Bertuzzied and had a way bigger lot.

Theres lots of issues here. First of all, I dont have a whole lot of sympathy for people who 'scrimped and saved' to buy a $1M+ house.

Although, I can understand then being upset if they bought a $3M home and now its only worth $2M because of this. Thats a huge problem if they have to sell for some reason.

Then again, there were no stipulations that this couldnt be done.

If you were comfortable with your home and not worried about selling or the payments or anything, the only real issue would be noise. But its no different than if Pisani were sitting on his back deck getting wasted with his buddies or if they're skating on the rink.

I'd be choked if I were Pisani, the way that article reads its like hes building the community rink, hes going to have mongrels from the entire neighbourhood treating his backyard rink like their own personal property.

Step 1: Put up fence.

Step 2: Ignore what's on the other side of fence, because it's not your business.

I drove down this street a few years ago. It's one of those typical McMansion neighbourhoods with row after row of the same 5 styles of 4000 sq. ft. houses set on a bald ass prairie with nothing to look at but your neighbours' giant ugly houses. I don't understand how people can spend that much and not at least have a couple of trees or something. The rink isn't going to do anything to hurt anyone's "view" of a giant brown lawn that is too big for anyone to water.

I'm not sure that he's a bad neighbour. Yesterday, my neighbours took it upon themselves to slash apart the front of my hedge/fence. Those are bad neighbours. ####

i doubt that Fernando is going to ahve the boys over for a game of shinny - imagine if a couple of them blew out thier knees.

anyways, i suppose i could see why the neighbor is browned off, if you don't care for hockey the sound of pucks being shot in the winter really carries. and if the rink is lit, then the extra lighting could be annoying. hard to imagine that something like that would significantly lower the property value. in fact, i'd imagine that ferando's property taxes will increase. if the lady is not selling, then to me the perceived value loss becomes a moot point.

at the end of the day perhaps they should ahve looked at an acerage where you don't have to worry about your neighbors.

the rink looks top notch and Fernando should easily win the CBC backyard rink contest.

Good for the lady and her family to scrimp and save for years to buy that hosue, but it stuns me that you would put your life on hold and possibly do without so much other things to buy such a large house - but that is just me.

Yes? No? Maybe? I didn't say anything about those things and I don't really see why they matter in this case at all.

IMO, this would make him an awesome neighbour.

If there is too much noise late, late in the evening it's no different then any other party in any other neighbourhood. Call the cops or whatever. Other than that...put up a fence if you don't like it.

And I really really hope this neighbour doesn't have a dog that barks or mows the lawn in the early morning/later evening because that is also annoying....

Bitching for the sake of bitching...I don't think it will drop the value at all. I am sure Fernando will have enough common sense not to play hockey into the wee hours.

So he has an empty concrete pad instead of a yard for 11 months? Seems like a terrible idea to me.

Do you think Edmonton only has one month of winter?

All he has to do in the summer is put up a basketball net, and it's functional all over again.

An update in the St. Albert Gazette.

http://www.stalbertgazette.com/artic...ges-councillor

A motion before Sturgeon County council would ensure any future development of this kind would not be exempt from the normal development hearing process.

I suspect a lot of municipalities across the country will be taking their cue from this situation to do the same thing as well.

For amusement, I'll bleep these stories over to my two favourite County councillors in the rural area I live to see what they say.

Make sure you include that you're thinking of installing a Hockey Rink of your own.
