Good luck with the sale of your home. Try selling it fully furnished/give the buyer the option to purchase whatever they want. Additionally, hold an open house/garage sale. I did one with a cp member a little while back and if I remember correctly, they managed to sell quite a bit of stuff.

Went through the same thing about 8 months ago.
For the bigger stuff we used Kajiji for just about everything, including our dog, and were quite succesful. For the vehicles we put our cars on Kijiji and Autotrader.
We also had a couple of garage sales. It's pretty easy to offload just about any junk if it's priced low enough. However, we were able to take our furniture with us. For you, if you have an 'estate sale' you should be able to get rid of furniture fairly quickly.
For anything that was left over we gave away to charity.
Honestly, the whole ordeal was much easier than I expected. We only had a little trouble getting rid of our mini-van. Eventually we found a buyer and a low enough price.
Good luck!

Had to liquidate to get to Costa Rica. Kijiji is now your new friend. Stick to your guns, many people try to negotiate you down.
In the end, you end up giving a lot of stuff away for very little or free. It sucks looking back at it now, because it was a real waste of money. But if that's the sacrifice to live in the tropics, I'll take it.

Agree with this, I've dealt with them. Some charities are picky about what they will take, the Drop in Centre has a warehouse in the NE and they take pretty much anything useable. They will also pick up if you have enough stuff. You probably don't want to donate 90% of your things but the lower value items can really make a difference for someone who doesn't have much. I'd rather donate a $5 end table then have to deal with garage sale people trying to talk you down to $4.

I worked with a guy who moved to New Zealand a few years ago. He didn't think it would be a forever move so he rented his house and had a property agency manage it. He had somewhere to store his furniture and also lent a bunch of it out to friends.
Might be an option depending on how long you think the move will be.
Good luck.

I'm not to far from Chilliwack and would be interested in some items. I have a new place to outfit with furniture if you are moving those items and the tent trailer would be of interest as well.
Sounds like a big move, very exciting.
Realtors suggestions of Selling the house furnished could be an excellent idea. A friend just did this well he didn't make any money per say but he did save a boat load of time and that was what he needed.

Congrats Textcritic on the research opportunity, and chance to experience other parts of the world. I hope you keep in touch with CP. I have enjoyed and appreciated your input.
I haven't gone through the exercise myself, however if I had to, being somewhat of a packrat, there would be a fair amount of stuff I would have to shred. In this regard, a good company to use is Datashred.
All the best,

I will be working on a three year project, Biblical Texts Older than the Bible. My primary responsibilities will be working with a team of scholars on the editing and publication of numerous Dead Sea Scrolls fragments housed in The Shøyen Collection. In addition, I will also be responsible for bringing my own personal research project to publication, in which I will be examining various forms of historiography in the Dead Sea Scrolls, and attempting to determine if it is possible to isolate various groups from within them who came to identify themselves with the wider Essene movement.
Doesn't that sound exciting?!!
...Oh yeah. The position is housed at the University of Agder in Kristiansand, Norway.

Thats cool Text. Are there anthropology conclusions you plan to expand on? (i.e. social implications to how they move)

I will likely stay away from anthropology / sociology, and leave those sorts of speculations to the experts. As you can well imagine, bad things happen when experts on occasion step outside of their own disciplines.
In the last ten years or so, the growing consensus among scholars is that the group that wrote and collected the Dead Sea Scrolls were not such an isolated sect of "fringe" religious zealots. More likely, this was a significant religious group, who likely consisted of a variety of sub-groups or individual small communities that were beholden to many of the same ideals, but varied in certain practices, community structures, minor beliefs, etc. To this point, no one has attempted to isolate sub-groups, and I will attempt to do so through an analysis of various historiographic texts that all appear related, but with various differences in their own retelling of Essene origins and existence.
