Someone actually reading the article happens very rarely. I've given up reading the links as it only muddles the already-in-progress tirades.

Edit: The article if vauge so this is just my assumption, though I'd wager it's a lot more logical than they are going to record every conversation in an airport.
Other articles simply state that they'll be installed ". . . at the Ottawa airport’s international arrivals and other CBSA-controlled sections of the airport."

No word if that is ONLY around custom officials, or in waiting areas, etc. If they're looking to catch smugglers, I'd think they'd do it in all these areas. Either way of looking at it (OP way, or your way) it's an assumption to one degree or another.

HOWEVER, can anyone actually point out where the article says they are going to record every conversation in an airport?

it seems to me the people who are most outraged here would welcome interactions with law enforcement being recorded, as they are usually the ones who are most adamant that most law enforcement are usualyl jerks on power trips.
Let's put in cameras and recorders and get evidence that the man is harassing us!
Are you sure it's just at the customs inspection area and the only conversations being recorded are those between CBSA agents and the person being interviewed? This article makes it sound like they're also recording private conversations in areas around the aircraft gates:

Quote:
The controlled areas at Macdonald-Cartier International include the areas surrounding aircraft that have arrived in or are about to leave Canada; the primary inspection area where all travellers must report to a border services officer; the secondary inspection area where border services officers conduct further examinations of travellers and goods; as well as certain holding and departure areas at the airport.
Emphasis added.

No I'm not sure, I kind of explicitly stated that I was making an assumption, that in my opinion, given the limited information in the original article, is a lot more logical than "they are going to record every conversation in the airport"

From that article it sounds like the majority of the monitoring would be exactly where I said it would be, at the inspection points. Could there be more? It certainly seems so, but when the article just says "certain parts" and isn't specific at all, it seems like quite a stretch for people to be assuming that every conversation in the airport will be recorded, as has been suggested and outright stated in this thread.

The whole thing is going through a privacy assessment anyway, looks like the system is more or less working. Let's wait and see what the specifics of the recording are, and what the outcome of the assessment is before we go start a riot.

As was the long gun registry... but your IP address and browser history, that's government's business!
