No, it just speaks to the demographics of FFWD readers who voted in this poll. Those that voted for Julio's probably live in Kensington/Sunnyside and it's one of the few Mexican restaurants they know of, so it got a lot of votes by default.

I also wouldn't be surprised if some people just voted out of ignorance and honestly don't know what good Mexican food is supposed to taste like.

this is most likely true. I'm surprised Taco Time didn't make the cut, then.

FYI, for those looking for good Mexican food, Paloma in the NE is a nice hidden treasure - not far from Whitehorn LRT station.

I have no clue at all what dubstep is - I'm going to have to look that up.

I would venture to guess at least half of the voters came from Sunnyside area which his how you explain the propping up of the area, Peace Bridge, and Drue Farrell. Conversely pretty well any voters from other demographics would vote the exact opposite on the bridge and Druh which is why explains the opposite extremes in their placing on best/worst lists.

I just spent a week in Amsterdam and now get another 9 days in other European cities. This all after being in Abu Dhabi for an extended period. Reading that list made me really sad to be heading back to Calgary. Please, please tell me we can do better than the freakin Ship!

Are you a College Hipster? If not, then you'll be alright.

If so, well my friend, the Ship awaits.

I lived in Sunnyside about 10 years ago - drove through there for the first time in a long time and 10th Street was a flood of squeegee kid looking people. Those are your FFWD readers - that's why Kensington businesses and the Ship wins everything.

I lived there in a basement suite one year when I was in college. It's okay if you are young and work downtown but not a place I would bring up a family.

I think you are using the term 'wins' a little too liberally in this situation.

They've 'won' nothing. They've topped a list compiled by a complimentary hipster publication.

A think a major tenant of hipsterism is denying that you're a hipster. Your know deep down you are, you just love the irony of staying you're not.

+1 - Hillhurst/Sunnyside/Kensington has many great amenities for children.

I think you misread my post. I didn't say it was a place you would bring up a family. I said it was a place I wouldn't bring up a family.

My wife taught at the elementary school years ago in Sunnyside and she shares my opinion. There are lots of communities with great amenities for children. Just my personal feelings, no reason for you Sunnyside folk to get bent out of shape.

To each their own I guess, but I just can't see how someone couldn't spend a bit of time in Sunnyside and think it wouldn't be good for a family (plus I live here now, so that is a HUGE bonus for you). It is freaking excellent. Except for my worry that I will slowly evolve into some sort of granola-eating hipster. They have pills to slow that down right?

Best off-the-beaten-path day trip
  1. Bragg Creek
  2. Drumheller
  3. Kananaskis
Really? Bragg Creek is full of people on weekends. And Drumheller is an international destination.

They do, however the granola content of those pills is disturbingly high....
