Typical first day of the US Open. Take away Tiger, David Toms and Francesco Molinari and its a bunch of guys no one has heard of near the top of the leaderboard.

Almost no other notable top players have even tee'd off yet...............
Westwood
Donald
Kuchar
Dufner
Mcilroy
Oosthuizen
Kaymer
Rose
Stricker
D. Johnson
Watson and Phil are ####ting the bed hard today though
I mean I know many top guys haven't teed off, but its the first day of a major, and the US Open more than the others always seems to propel unknowns to the top spot. It makes sense too, because they generally get to play in quiet, calm conditions unlike say the gong show Tiger, Phil and Bubba must be dealing with.

Ok, I agree with that. Doesn't seem to be bothering Tiger today though. Can't believe how bad those other 2 are doing and Tiger just staying in the zone.
Phil said coming into the week that he has played his best the past few years when paired with Tiger. Notably, that was usually when Tiger wasn't playing that well.

I know +9 isn't an impressive score but I think it is for that 14 year old Andy Zhang. I'm sure the triple bogey on the 1st didn't help him either but think he did well considering. Plus he shot only +1 on the back 9 which is great! Still think it was foolish for him to be in the tourney but glad he survived.
Go Tiger Go!

A couple of unknowns at par or better but for the most part it's pretty good golfers up there at the end of Day 1.
Notable players:
Graeme McDowell (-1), Nick Watney (-1), Justin Rose (-1), Tiger Woods (-1), David Toms (-1), Jim Furyk (E), Matt Kuchar (E), Ian Poulter (E), Robert Karlsson (E)
Unknowns:
Michael Thompson (-4), Beau Hossler (E), Jae-Bum Park (E), Jason Bohn (E), Alistair Presnell (E)

McDowell - Won at Pebble, will not withstand this tight course in the end.
Watney - very possable
Rose - mental midget IMO
Toms - Only if his putter gets crazy stupid (which he has done)..but no.
Furyk - big heart but game is gone IMO (putting sucks)
Kuchar - Big possibilty
Poulter - another mental midget
Karlsson - velvet swing (possible)
If Tiger shoots par or better tomorrow he's the winner come Sunday IMO.
I could see everyone over par by the time the day is done. The course is basically a nightmare and the rough isn't even that grown out. Imagine it if was the standard 6-8" USGA rough, winner might be close to +10.

Absolutely I'd say that score is more impressive than people will give it credit for. Hell if he can go out and somehow shoot a 70 today he might very well make the cut.

some ugly starts to round two, as Kucher starts off with a double and Fowler drops a Triple
They were saying a lot of the pin placements today require a cut or fade... Golf channel mentioned some time ago that Kuchar may have a tough time at the open as he typically just plays a draw. All PGA pros can cut and draw the ball, but very few can do both with an equal amount of confidence and accuracy.
