worked with over 10 geologists over the last 5 years. Work closely with them day to day, made some real solid friendships with them.
Most are alright, pretty awesome people. Although also, couple of them have reminded me of Springs1 but in an office setting.
If I didn't do what I do today I would have gone into petroleum geology, and I'm not sure I totally agree with that technology comment rendering the field less important. (Although engies may like you to think that). Maybe in N. America to a certain extent, but even then not totally sure. Internationally... no, still lots of the world can be searched and pools delineated, I'd think particularly offshore.
The worst geologists are the ones that won't take risks and just blindly follow what other competitors do. RGMG. Also if you're naturally pessimistic you'll probably be a crappy geologist too.
Geophysicists are usually pretty awesome people. The world of 3D seismic can get pretty complex pretty quickly (in my eyes, but then, I guess that's not hard to do).

It used to take me 2 weeks to get over a dry hole. Now I can do it in 24 hrs.

good, the people that aren't afraid usually end up being better overall at their job.

Thats great I was not expecting such a turn out.
Question for Geologists, is it possible for a Geophysicist to transition into a Geologist?

LOL. I think you may have borrowed that from Jack Nicholson's comment about women, in "As good as it gets".

I'm a geophysicist. Just graduated and can't get a job, becoming worried I'll never get a geophysics job and will have to start a new career path.

Anyone have any insight into what is going on with the current lack of Geophysics/Geology jobs in Alberta? Why are new-grads suffering so hard and experienced well competent folk out of a job?

Too many grads. Nowadays, U of C had what, 300 grads last year? When I was going 10-15 years ago, we had that many across all three years in the department. There was a bunch of noise back then about how old the geoscientist community was, and how they were on the verge of retiring en masse, and that there wouldn't be enough new grads to do all the work needed. They misjudged how much later into retirement the old guys were willing to work, and to some degree how much work there was going to be (by they I mean APEGGA and the university admissions department), and oversaturated a market too soon.
That's my take on it. If someone else has other data that would highlight a different reason, I'd love to hear it.
