i wasted three minutes of my life and called. i was told for a canadian sedan version of a Yaris the right fender would be $187. more than i expected - but it could be reasonable if you had to order one online for $140 and pay $20 or so for shipping.

This is true for some parts but not all parts. Alot of Mopar parts come with Aftermarket Stampings on them that includes most headlights tailights and fenders. They jack up the prices because they are OEM but in reality are being made in the aftermarket factories overseas. There are different levels of aftermarket parts.
There are reman parts which are usually front/rear bumpers which have been repaired either at the aftermarkets factory somewhere or overseas. There are Capa certified parts which most shops use the fit and finish is usually pretty good and for the most part that is all your insurance will pay for unless you have a brand new car. There are also valu line parts which are more for curbers and guys working out of their garage those parts do not fit as well but are usually cheaper.
You may be able to get away with a valu line fender if your installing it yourself but if its a bumper cover you probably want to get yourself a certified one because the primers are usually stable and you wont get peeling issues like you would with a valu line and the fit and finish is way better.
