After this thread, yesterday's quarterly meeting suddenly makes a little more sense when I hear about so and so not being able to get their SAGD going and consequently being in a weak position.

Are you just referring to companies not having the bank to finance the projects or the people, or even regulatory approval??

Have to remember that loads of companies have land that is on the periphery of te McMurray trend that is of marginal quality relative to Foster/Christina etc. Not sure some companies even want to develop.

Every info session, class, or seminar I've ever attended, the first question at the beginning is usually "how many people work in Oil and Gas?". I have never seen less than 70% of the room raise their hands. Fact of the matter is, Alberta (and especially Calgary) is fueled by O&G. We go where O&G go.

Question. What will happen to the stockpile of sulphur that is getting bigger and bigger? The pictures mention that the pricing isn't very good right now so the piles are getting bigger and bigger.

The Edmonton airport was small, and walking from the jet to the door I couldn't help but thinking how it made the Williston, ND airport seem almost cosmopolitan.

The drive in from the landing strip was filled with industrial operations blowing steam and smoke, motels, and a lot of truck traffic all under a steel gray sky. Not the most picturesque place.

Looking at downtown from the hotel it was hard to be impressed and the drive to the city center was filled with strip malls, a handful of strip joints, and massage parlors. The parlors are now open 24 hours a day though new legislation is trying to change that.

Not a huge Edmonton fan, but nice cherry picking...the article actually talks about what an nice surprise downtown Edmonton is and how it looks really cool from the south side of the river.
And the Edmonton airport isn't too exciting for sure (and in Leduc of course) but comparing it to a field that gets 5 commercial flights a day is a bit of a low blow.

Great photos. I've only been up to Fort Mac once, after we shut in our SAGD operation and I had to collect documents from site. It was so fascinating, I'd love to go back up again, but the chances of getting to go again is slim to none.

Sounds like he landed in the municipal airport which is that small.

In the article he talks about going through mall hell (South Crossing), then 'the historic district' (Whyte Ave?) that included the farmers market, and takes all his pics from across the river. Based on that I assumed he went to the International

I am pretty sure YXD is closed so it would have been YEG. My guess is he flew a smaller plane so like flew out of the Aero Centre likely on a private plane as no other flight would walk outside. If thats the case then the Aero Centre is just a square building you go from check-in to a plane in a very short time frame. Its part of YEG but not connected to YEG - similar to McCall South at YYC.

YEG for normal commercial flights is far larger than Williston ND by quite the margin.

I was so impressed with the photo journal and the articles that I invited the writer, Robert Johnson, to come to CP and ask questions if he had any.

There are a lot of members here with a lot of know-how in the industry, and the photo journal I posted in the OP has over 250,000 views, so I thought it might be beneficial if Robert had any questions that they could be answered here.

He said he would try to login tomorrow, so hopefully we can answer some of his questions. Provided he has any. Reading through his articles, it is quite evident that he has done his research.

To me the whole damn operation is absolutely fascinating.

In all honesty, I am in favour of in situ operations because they are less ugly than the open pit mining style used around Ft. McMurray. Fewer yakking treetards who rely soley on actors for their environmental talking points equals lower levels of smear campaigns when it comes to Canadian oil.
I recall reading somewhere lately that in situ operations where supposed to account for 80% of all oil extraction operations up there by 2015. Not sure how accurate that is, but either way its great news.

I'm pretty sure that's including loss of production for the weeks/months for said plant.

mykalberta is correct in this assumption. There's a similar setup at YYC.

How do you deal with the long lead times to getting results. Would drive me crazy to see some production so far away. Also, do you need to get a whole wack of people to agree to changes since the dollar figures are so large?

Do you run out of digit spaces when doing economic runs on peep/mosaic/Aries? With numbers as high as this.

I heard a turnaround at a certain SAGD site was something like $130MM. Holy Christ!
Not sure if it's the same everywhere, but the way they have it setup here is people are given a cash amount to their signature, I've heard from 150k to 5 million.

But the total cost for a turnaround is not surprising as the cost of parts is ridicolous, intruments running in 10k amount and some interals at 800k and thats just part of a piece of equipment. Add in the labor to complete the work and the short amount of time to acomplish the work, the costs add up.

Very cool pics, thanks for sharing. I work in oil & gas in an office but I've always wanted to spend some time up north and see first-hand all the things that I learn from the comforts of my own desk.
