Regarding the Mitch Wahl situation:

Centre Mitch Wahl, with a year left on his entry-level contract, was not invited to this week's get-together.

"Just where Mitch is in his development and his status within the organization, we didn't feel like it was necessary," said Flames assistant general manager John Weisbrod. "He asked to be loaned out last year once he didn't make the team in Abbotsford. We accommodated that (by sending him to Hamilton)."

Weisbrod added that Ron Sutter, the Flames' director of player personnel, is still in contact with Wahl, 22.

With the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, Wahl collected 284 points in 273 dates.

"Obviously, he's a very talented kid," said Weisbrod. "But we try to keep this (camp) tight and we try to keep the numbers small. Even being at 39 is higher than we wanted it. And we just felt that it was more important, with those spots, to get a new, fresh viewing of guys that we hadn't seen and build some new relationships."

Just for sh*ts and giggles (and because CP is absolutely dead right now), let's take a look at the Heat's lineup IF there's an NHL lockout:

Forwards:

Baertschi-Reinhart-Sylvester
Byron-Walter-Kolanos
Howse-Horak-Nemisz
Bouma-Street-Aliu

extras: Bancks, Ferland, Eddy, Laing, Patterson, Wahl, Cameron.

Defense:

Lamb-Wilson
Breen-Brodie
Piskula-Martin

extras: McKelvie.

Goalies:

Irving
Taylor (maybe?)
Ortio (maybe?)
Bakala (maybe?)

No matter how Ward sets the lineups, there are definitely going to be some disappointed players.

Just a quick question, can Cervenka play for the Heat if there's a lockout? I'm not sure he would, maybe he'd just go back to the KHL.

Anyone else wanna guess the lines or have comments?

Gits n Shiggles, me boy. Gits n Shiggles.

I question whether Wahl and Baertschi play for the Heat next year. As I'm in Kamloops I keep planning on coming to Abbotsford for a game, but I haven't made it yet. Baertschi would change that for sure. Wahl is done IMO

There's no doubt in my mind that Baertschi plays for the Heat next year if there's a lockout. Wahl, I'm not so sure about. Something tells me he's going to pull a Watt and ask for a release so he can get a new lease on life. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the California teams give him a shot in their system.

You caught me on that. Forgot about the lockout. If that's the case I'll definitely catch a game or two down there. I'll look out for you

You forgot Turner Elson and Brett Carson, I'd assume Ben Street will make first or second line centre, wouldn't Blair Jones be eligible too?

I think that looks like a very young good roster. Much better than years ago in QC...

I'm looking for Martin to take a big step this season at least into becoming a regular or playing the majority of the season. With his style of play, I don't think he'll ever have a completely healthy season (sort of like Bancks).

Martin reminds me a bit of a young Cory Sarich. Big, hard hitting defenseman with some skating issues, but he's young enough to overcome those. I'm really fond of Martin's game if he works out the kinks.

Honestly, based on the AHL rosters from the last lock-out, and the NHL players who stayed around, I would expect it to look more like:

Cammalleri - Backlund - Comeau
Baertschi - Stajan - Jackman
Bouma - Horak - Nemisz
Howse - Reinhart - Ferland
Street/Kolanos

Bouwmeester - Giordano
Brodie - Butler
Babchuk - Martin

Irving
Ortio

All these guys are either really young (and don't want to lose development time), or stayed in the AHL during the last lockout (like Cammalleri, Bouwmeester, Stajan, Babchuk, Jackman).

Those guys played in the AHL because they were still very developmental. At this point in their careers I think only Stajan and Jackman would be open to playing in the AHL.

All these guys are either really young (and don't want to lose development time), or stayed in the AHL during the last lockout (like Cammalleri, Bouwmeester, Stajan, Babchuk, Jackman).

They wouldn't all fit because of the AHL veteran rule. They need to dress 12 guys with under 260 games of pro experience, one with up to 320 games, and only five veterans who have played a greater amount of games. Guys like Kolanos, Walter, Wilson, Piskula are already taking up the AHL veteran spots so there wouldn't be room to squeeze many, if any guys who have over 260 games of pro experience. NHL, AHL, IHL and European elite leagues count in these games for experience.

In the last lockout Bouwmeester and Cammaleri hadn't played enough to take up AHL veteran slots so they fit on AHL teams easily. If there is a lockout this year only the young guys that don't count as AHL vets like Brodie, Byron, Bouma, and Horak could play there freely without taking up a veteran spot. The AHL veteran rule only limits skaters so it looks like any goalie can play down there.

Quote:
What is the AHL's development rule?

In the AHL, player development is a top priority. The American Hockey League and the Professional Hockey Players' Association have the following development rule in place for the 2011-12 season:

Of the 18 skaters (not counting two goaltenders) that teams may dress for a regular-season game, at least 13 must be qualified as "development players." Of those 13, 12 must have played in 260 or fewer professional games (including AHL, NHL, IHL and European elite leagues), and one must have played in 320 or fewer professional games. All calculations for development status are based on regular-season totals as of the start of the season.

9 D-men that are likely going to start with the Heat, especially with 8 guys already slated for Flames silks (Bouwmeester, Giordano, Wideman, Butler, Brodie, Sarich, Smith and Babchuk)

Very likely a d-man or two are going to be dealt, because we now have 17 total on NHL or AHL deals.

I think I understand why Feaster's stocking up on AHL-level defensemen. When training camp happens I think Feaster knows he's going to lose Wilson to waivers when he gets sent down, so he's stockpiling d-men as a preemptive measure in case Wilson and Carson are claimed.

I really believe Carson will end up in Europe, plus as you know the Heat seemingly get destroyed by injuries on an annual basis so this probably has alot to do with that as well.

I see Irving backing up in Calgary, and Karlsson heading to Europe.....and hopefully in a situation like Wilson's, where the contract gets terminated.

Hopefully Jordan Singalet was correct when he said Ortio was returning to NA this fall. Would love to see him get more work in a platoon situation with Brust.
