I haven't been hit by a car in many years either, but I still use my eyes to look both ways while crossing the street.

You are right and thinking back, I have no idea why I posted that, other than it just came out wrong.
What I am referring to is even engaging in the occasional risky behaviors online, I almost never need to rely on my real time scanner for anything. I have MBAM scans that run daily. I scan with SAS weekly or if I suspect any chance of being compromised. Those 2 things catch enough that I hardly ever have MSSE kick in for anything.
That said, I know regular users don't do this, and always (except apparently for on CP!) strongly recommend to anyone I give any type of support to, that they have a multi-layered AV solution. Including, interesting enough, continual harping on one of the Managers at work who recently switched to a Mac, whenever he mentions that he doesn't run AV software.
I will now hang my head in shame.

What's your opinion on SuperAntiSpyware? The only time I used it was when we had a computer infected with what turned out to be a version of the Sinowal rootkit. SAS caught it, but my beef was it named it in such a way it was impossible to research. They don't seem to maintain a very good virus database.
MSE and MBAM also detected the same Sinowal infection, and it was easy to find a webpage or two to read up on the virus.

Lol, you're forgiven.
To be sure, some AV software is bloated and causes performance and compatibility issues. But there are a lot of good products that aren't intrusive, and machines are so fast these days that the slight extra cost in CPU time is worth even a marginal increase in detection rate.
When I look at Activity Monitor on my Mac, for example, the Symantec scanning engine is the 16th largest app in total CPU run time, behind such heavy weights as Twitterrific, Safari, Outlook, iTunes, and the kernel. On Windows machines, you can add the CPU time column to the processes tab in Task Manager to get the same statistic. It's a good way of evaluating what percentage of total compute power the AV engine is consuming.

SAS is something I use mostly because I use the portable version (no install) and I set the file to read only, so I am reasonably sure that it has not been compromised itself. I have seen enough infections on users/clients machines where MBAM and the real time AV were disabled to always want that extra option.
On my machine, it tends to only find cookies, so if I didn't already have it I probably wouldn't bother.

MSE will be integrated into Windows 8, it won't be a separate product.

If you want something a little more robust with a firewall as well as a sandbox built in, and free as well (why anyone wants to pay for this stuff is beyond me), try Comodo Internet Security. I have been using it for years and love it. Tests really well in numerous AV tests I've done on virtual machines:

In this test Kaspersky came in 2nd to Bitdefender. MSE came in last but I use it on 3 computers and haven't had a problem. I use AVG on another and it's fine too. I like free.

Had an idea!

MSE has been great for me, especially when I copy stuff for people onto their flash drive.

I returned the Kaspersky A/V today and downloaded the MSE based on the comments on here, so thanks for that.
I'm going to keep the free trial of Norton as well until it runs out.

Don't run multiple AV products at the same time unless they are specifically designed to do so (MSSE and Norton are not).

Oh?
Ok, thanks for the tip. How about anti-spyware and adware programs?

In general, they tend to be designed to work in conjunction with AV programs, so should be fine.
