Basically what ur talking about doing would be classified as random camping and it's perfectly legal in lots of areas. As was previously mentioned I would head to the old man river area south of calgary (about 1.5 hour drive down highway 22x). As u head south on highway 22 u will cross the oldman river and see a large closed gas station with a red tin roof. Head west at that gas station about 30 minutes and u will hit the forestry road. If u have buddy's with u there are lots of campgrounds they could stay at (racehorse, Dutch, and the oldman are the main ones). Dutch would be perfect, they could camp there and u could head west of the campground and into the bush to have your adventure. Lots of streams out there for water and fish, lots of deadfall to build your shelter, be careful it is bear country but there are enough people around that u likely won't see any. I've been going back there for about 20 years and have only seen beers on 2 occasions and they were both black bears.
Best of luck.

Great area's to camp out here, but make sure anything you pack in comes back out with you. It's amazing to see the amount of waste left behind out there. I do most of my camping and hunting in this area and i bring garbage bags just to clean up what my camp site has laying around from the previous people
and ill normally fill a couple of them. As for bears, the whole eastern slopes is covered with them so be bear smart, make sure you got spray on you as there is ALOT of grizzlies in the racehorse, oldman and cabin ridge areas.

It amazes me that anyone would be ignorant enough to litter anywhere, let alone the back country. Good for you for doing your part to try and keep our rec areas clean. I wish all users of the area cared as much as you do.

A guy I was talking to a few weeks ago said that discussions were being had to stop the random camping in the forestry reserve. I am of two minds on that. It is too bad, because it's a beautiful area and I've enjoyed a lot of time there in the solitude! Of course the other side is that a lot of people drive an RV/trailer in and basically leave it for the entire summer. I am curious to know if any are actually year round, but regardless it's not right!
Part of me would like to see an end to the random camping just to protect the environment there from the people who basically setup a private campground for the summer.

Gone will be the days of "free camping" and free ATV use. It will be a user pay to play system like in the US. You will be issued a sticker for your machine when you register it. That money will be re distributed back into the campgrounds and off road use areas. This is probably still 5 or more years away. Other than the you have to pay issue this works out because there will be more trail maintenace done in places that desperately need it and alot of the free campers (not all) pretty much use the back woods for a garbage dump and this should help clean some of that up.

Well we pay for fishing licenses and at least some of that money is earmarked for the preservation of the fishery and conservation. Is there a huge difference?

Check the regs - you may not be able to keep any fish in that area. The Livingstone is catch and release for sure.

This info is part of the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. Eventually this will happen in every FLUZ in the province.

There will be a huge difference. Think how many people are out and about every weekend using atvs, dirtbikes and trucks there are definately more people doing that than going fishing and the numbers keep growing.IF people think there will be no user pay system in effect when SSRP rolls out for real they will be in for a shock.

What I mean is that it's the same idea. Might be more people, but that doesn't mean it should be free just because of that.

The upper old man area near the BC border would be the best place I can think of. Its very much as off the charts you can get without really having to go off the charts. Plenty of wildlife, vegetation would be available in the late summer months and you wouldn't encounter more then a handful of others along the way....if that's what you're going for.

Its on rotation IIRC - you can keep whitefish for sure and it may vary on the oldman river if you're above or below the falls.

I agree that there are morons that destroy areas in random camping areas but the vast majority of them are the drunkard long weekend crew. Go to these areas on a normal weekend and you might not see another soul.
Either way - the damage the odd idiot camper is causing is nowhere near the destruction caused by clear cut logging and mining activities in these same areas.
