Try taking a stroll through places like Inglewood, Chinatown, Kensington, 17th Ave etc. Lots of shops/restaurants/cafes you won't see in a strip mall or shopping centre. Good for people watching.
Walk, cycle or rollerblade the Bow River pathway/riverwalk. Check out Crescent road - killer view of the city.

Body has some injuries that need healing, so sports may take a back seat to start metal detecting. Anyone else here do that? I have a few spots planned, any suggestions for places to check out?

Hopefully I can find some old bottles and things like that, they make a much more impressive tip.

I have a friend who's moving to the Calgary area this month. Thinking about going up to visit her sometime this year? Best time?

It's the Stampede's 100th anniversary this year. It's always a party and should be even bigger. COming from Nashville you'd probably appreciate many aspects of it.
It always starts the Friday before the first full week of July and goes 10 days.

Old bottles are good finds if you are looking around old homesteads and things like that. The detector won't find them, but if you happen to find where they used to throw their garbage, you luckily can find intact bottles, jars etc.

I was just busting your balls. Funding stuff like that would be fun but with my luck, it would result in nothing more than a fairly significant rusty nail and barbed wire collection.

I saw a commercial for Whites Metal Detectors the other day. Bloody hilarious. I was pretty much thinking that it looks like a crappy time to carry around a weedwacker that beeps, as well as a shovel, and wait for a beep and then dig a hole.
I think the best thing about the commercial was that they were going to include some treasure in your order, assumably so that you can bury it in your yard for your kid to find.
