I was a huge Bronconnier supporter, but I am admittedly biased because I know him on a business and personal level.

I will say this though, the stuffy image Dave has by in the public eye is so far off how the guy is in real life. He is one of the nicest, down to earth and FUNNY dudes you could ever ever meet in real life. The mans knowledge of the history and inner workings of the city are mind boggling, even beyond what you would expect a mayor to have to know.
Bronco was a crook.

Nenshi has tried to implement change but council is stuck with the old ways. If he keeps questioning them logically he'll get public opinion/momentum. As for the cops in Calgary theyre just mad their budget got questioned. Public safety has more to do with demographics and unemployment figures than it does with police spending.

Calgary has a smart guy mayor and as a Calgarian that lives abroad I'm proud of that fact and feel Nenshi represents a Calgary that is in safe hands.

Sorry.

But it just doesn't seem like our mayor likes any criticism.
It also ignores the fact that there are two other bridges a five minute walk away in either direction.

I'm a 30-something who lives 3,500+ KM away from my parents' basement and have paid my share of taxes to all three levels of government. I voted for Nenshi last time, and I'll gladly vote for him again next election.

Man, I'm really getting tired of your constant crapping on getting an education, pylon. Some of us worked really hard for our degrees, and are proud of the fact that it's helped us move forward in life. It takes dedication and a fack load of effort to get that little piece of paper, so when I see someone like you constantly be-little it and be proud of their ignorance, it grinds my gears.

It's not fancy, it's not high-fallutin', and it's not elitist...an education, no matter if you're studying to be a plumber or a physician, is the best tool you can get to help you move forward in life. Personally, it taught me the skills to be better at what I love, opened me up to new ideas and rounded me out as a person, and hell, gave me the ability to jump to the head of the line over schlubs who thought paying attention in high-school was way too gay for them.

Being ignorant should never be something to be proud of. Just because you dropped out of high-school and were humping husky heifers in the back of your VW while the rest of us were studying things that we'll mostly never use, doesn't mean you did things the right and only way...even if you've turned out just fine. Most of the people I know who only have a high-school education (never mind dropped out) are either stuck doing menial warehouse work or have become welfare-sucking parasites. And my guess is, at the end of the day, if you had the foresight to keep at school for a few more years and get yourself a business degree, chances are you would be doing better too. Street-smarts and hustle is important, but it's only one part of the equation.

So as you can probably tell, it pisses me off when someone like Nenshi is denigrated because he knows stuff. Our mayor should know stuff. Running a city should not be about street smarts and gut-feelings (which hey, can't hurt, but not everyone is Ralph), but should be mostly based on knowledge and actual insight. We should be proud that this guy makes decisions based on study. Just because you don't relate to the guy, doesn't mean he's not the man for the job.

So he's squirrelly and dresses like a goof. Big effin deal. The man knows his stuff.

Somebody should get a webcam set up so everyone can see how many people actually use this bridge in the coming weeks. My guess will be 100 - 200

The best thing Nenshi ever did was make everyone who visited the Mayor's office sign in and the list be made public. How much money did Bronco get from the anonymous lobbyists he let in?

Can't believe someone is almost as good as Ralph Klein as mayor.

You just invalidated all your points. Bronconnier was the worst mayor in Calgary history.

Do you have a poster of him and Chretien shaking hands in your man cave? I would really like a copy.

I don't really want to get in middle of this debate, but could you clarify the quoted statement?

When I see it with the rest of your response, I leads me to believe you think "no degree = ignorance"

Clearly the post he's reference is applying a negative connotation to having a degree. He's obviously not saying that if you have no degree you're ignorant, I'm not sure where you got that from unless you're digging for a fight. What he's saying is that if you reference someone having a degree as a detriment to their character, you're probably ignorant.

When I read it, I thought he was suggesting that bragging about not graduating high school isn't something to be celebrated. Even if you're relatively successful.

I've seen Pylon admit that he's not proud of that fact that he didn't graduate from high school. However, I've also seen him insult people (like Nenshi) because they have a formal education.

Nope, certainly not digging for a fight. Get enough of those on Twitter, no digging needed. Just seeking clarity.

I don't think being ignorant is something to be ashamed of. We are each who we are; everyone should be proud of themselves regardless of their IQ.

Likewise, one shouldn't be ashamed of not having a degree.

I guess that is part of the appeal. I guarantee you Nenshi was the kid in class that ratted out his classmates to gain brownie points from his teacher.
I assume you're alluding to this myth that he lives in his parent's basement. In fact, he owns his house and his parents live with him (and sometimes with his sister). His parents are elderly and particularly his father requires care. So on top of his 70hr a week job, he spends time caring for them.

He's not the "spineless twerp" in this conversation...that sir, would be you.

By the way, he also owns a second investment property near MRU. He pays taxes on and rents to students.

Can't believe someone is almost as good as Ralph Klein as mayor.
It should also be pointed out that he has yet to raise a single penny toward re-election (even though as incumbent mayor he could gave raised hundreds of thousands by now). He believes very strongly in campaign finance reform and will not fundraise until one year to election day (as should be legislated). He also voluntarily abides by every rule he is proposing including disclosure, donation limits, and spending limits.

He is absolutely a man of the utmost integrity. I'd challenge anyone to find an instance where he has broken a promise or not moved forward (or has attempted to move forward) any of his campaign promises.

Nenshi is one of the most honest and ethical figures in Calgary. That's something I think the general public is having a hard time getting used to.

I'd rather an ethical mayor with integrity get a handful of things pushed through in an open and transparent manner than a sleazy pawn in the backpocket of developers or interest groups with lots of political clout.

I have to say that this is very commendable and actually shows a great deal of integrity and selflessness which is pretty rare in todays society and something I personally have a lot of respect for.
