EI sickness benefits are for 15 weeks, when you do not have short-term benefits with your employer.

Long term could be CPP disability benefits if you don't have employer benefits.

EI is not stringent at all, there is a form you that is to be filled out by a doctor (date of return to work and nature of illness), then submit your claim form, very straight forward. My claim was obvious and well supported (Neurological specialist supported my claim) so it may not be easy for everyone...

I am currently working on getting off EI benefits (looking for a job) after a few months where I could not work due to illness. I no longer have a position to return to, the company I worked for was sold during my absence, the new owner does not have the ability to represent the product portfolio I have my expertise in. Effectively laid-off.

If I was this workers union rep I would almost certainly be telling them they were SOL as you can't call in and ask for a stress day, you should have just used a sick day/24 hour flu.

Now if that gets refused and you still have sick days left we're filing a greviance baby!
I just meant you're not going to your union rep to discuss a grievance unless you're in a union. A surprisingly large number of workers don't have a written contract they can look to let alone a collective agreement. Many don't even have so much as a job offer letter.

Is it the only job in town? If the employer has no compassion for their people, he should quit and find a place that cares about him.

Give an employee time off when they ask for it or deal with people not asking in advance (last minute sick days) and having the bottom of the barrel employees. The top tier of staffing get treated with respect! Treat your staff like crap and end up with crap staff.

I've taken stress leave before after having to deal with a bad accident with multiple deaths including children. I think most companies will require a Dr.'s note then you can get whatever time you need to get things together. As someone mentioned if the company is union it might be easier to do or at least it should be outlined completely as to what the expectations of the employee and employer are in those situations.
