Is Speed awful because it has different commentators, production, etc.?

Speed uses their own guys who call the race from monitors in their own studio which I believe is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. They are at the mercy of whatever feed they happen to get.

Although both broadcasts have their qualities, I generally prefer TSN as well. They use the British feed, who have a full broadcast crew on site including pitlane reporters. The color guy (David Coulthard) is a recently retired fairly successfull F1 driver, so he provides very good insights during the race, and the new announcer (I believe it's the same guy who was doing MotoGP the last few years) is knowledgable with just the right amount of excitement.
Speedvision has Steve Matchett, ex F1 mechanic, who provides great mechanical information about the cars, and David Hobbs, also a former F1 driver, as their color guys along with a decent announcer. Unfortunately Hobbs hasn't seen the inside of an F1 car since the sixties, is getting a bit long in the tooth, causing him to ramble occasionally, and has a habit of making weird sound effects throughout the race. Also, as mentioned, they aren't actually at the race which is sometimes noticeable, and the blackout means you have wait for the repeat.
On a side note, if you want to read some good F1 books, Try Steve Matchett's books. Life in the Fast Lane and The Mechanics Tale are great reads

Started off sort of boring, but the last 16 or so laps were extremely exciting. Poor Kimi's tyres just died with 7 or so laps to go, from 2nd to 14th.
First career win for Nico Rosberg and again domination by the McLaren drivers.

Such a great race! Great to see so many teams so close together. 3 races, 3 different winners from 3 different teams. Great start to the year.

Still have a win this year. Plus Massa makes the car look worse. He's got a huge mental block it seems this year, not racing very good at all.

Ferrari is horrible at the moment, and it's no secret that Alonso's win in Malaysia was only due to the weather conditions and a good strategy. Under normal circumstances, they are nowhere near McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull and Lotus. It seems to me that Ferrari has had problems early in the year for a few seasons now. It's frustrating because they then need half of the season to kind of catch up with the other teams, and basically their championship chances are gone by then.
Ferrari also has one of the weirdest driver pairings of the whole F1 - they have both one of the best and one of the worst drivers. Alonso has been without a doubt among the three best drivers for years now, maybe he is even the best one. He makes the car look better than it is and rarely makes mistakes (like today).
On the other hand, Massa continues to get worse every year. He was good a few years back, but he began to struggle when the FIA forbade (is that the correct past form of forbid? it sounds weird ) traction control and other technical aids. He also seems to really struggle with the Pirelli tyres. And obviously, that head injury back then in Budapest had an influence on his performance too. Ferrari has really hold on to him for a really long time, you can't blame them. They gave him a lot of chances when other teams would have probably fired him. But enough is enough ... Alonso dominates him with ease.
I'm willing to bet that we'll see a driver change even during the season. Massa has to seriously step up in Bahrain to keep his job. Adrian Sutil would be a good option to replace for the rest of the season. Perez can take over next season.

1. Vettel
2. Raikkonen
3. Grosjean
Raikkonen is back with a bang.
Can't wait for the SPA Grand Prix, he will take his first win there.

Good Canadian Grand Prix. 7 Races, 7 different winners. Amazing season continues. Nice to see a different podium again. Really can't believe Red Bull and Ferrari chose to stay with the one stop strategy. Vettel and Alonso should have been on the podium, but real great for Perez and Grosjean.

I would have loved to hear the in-car audio feed from Alonzo for the last 6 laps or so.

Holy F. i need to go back to bed because i'm still dreaming. An exciting F1 race without rain??? impossible!
Sucks to see Schumacher on the podium though. Wish he would just go away the dirty #######.

That was certainly an entertaining race. A few rookies made a some rookie mistakes. Very impressed with Grosjean; he'll be a champion one day. If his Renault and Vettel's Red Bull hadn't broken down the greasy Spaniard would have been lucky to take 3rd, if placing at all.
Interesting podium; three worldchampions! And good for Schumi, there is no denying that man's talent.

I have never really liked Vettel, but he is seriously starting to piss me off. Yesterday he blamed the safety car for his breakdown and pretty much called out the race control because he figured they only got the safety car out there to make the race more interesting and give Alonso a chance to win. When he collided with Karthikeyan a few races ago, he called him an idiot in interviews ... and the list goes on. The guy is such a sore loser, it's unbelievable.
On a different note: fantastic to see Alonso win, that was really surprising given the bad qualifying result. And Kimi up there too
