I get the economist and Scientific American. But the economist arrives on wednesdays and frankly that's just way to late to be reading last weeks news. Especially since it's published on Sundays. SI's also chronically late, but it's not the type of mag where that matters all that much.

Don't read a lot of magazines, the internet has pretty much replaced all other news sources.
But I occasionally read
Time
People
National Geographic
Electronic Gaming Monthly
Wired
in the bathroom.

Harper's - $24 annual subscription and the best writing and humour you'll get in a magazine
Economist - substantially more expensive but if you like world news this is the only place to get it
I used to get the Walrus but it just pales in comparison to Harper's.
Magazines I hate:
Any of the craptacular men's magazines: Maxim, FHM, etc.

No subscriptions, but I usually read People, and occasionally Maxim, FHM or UMM.
And the Hockey News......but that's not really a mag, is it??
I actually like Time and MacLeans, but never read them until I'm in the dentist or doctor's office.

Mmm, funny thing about the Economist and playboy being with each other.
A little while ago, some university researcher found out that there is more full frontal nudity in it than any other Magazine (assuming they are picking from umm respectable magazines)

And yes, Im the Associate Art Director at I.D magazine. Is your gf a designer too?
|
Yeah, she's a self-employed graphic designer, and she happens to be a big fan of your magazine. I actually found it lying around on the weekend and ended up reading the article on Mizrahi. She designs a magazine herself; one called Beyond Magazine. It's a small, ads-free/subscription-based publication that should be coming out four times a year once they get up to speed. I'll point you to the website for her company and her gallery/studio/bookstore in downtown Calgary, incase you're curious (or if you want to do a feature on her in I.D! then she can never bug me about spending too much time on calgarypuck again!):

hmmm vangool, that definitely sounds familiar. i must have come across it back home somewhere. what is your girlfriends name? perhaps i know her.
that bookstore looks really nice as well. Calgary definitely could use more of these small boutique multipurpose establishments, they just ad an interesting layer of life to a city. Ive always thought what Calgary needs is a really good dedicated-design store, where people could buy all the latest and greatest in well thought out products (not unlike Moss here in New York, www.mossonline.com ). With the amount of money in that city, i think it could easily support it.

The Hockey News is the only magazine that I have a subscription for but I will generally read whatever is on the table beside me in the waiting room of my MD's office.

The only magazine we subscribe to is National Geographic. It's always a great read.
I've subscribed to The Hockey News in the past, but I found that it wasn't very informative to someone with a thirst for hockey news and access to the internet.
I find the sports magazine giants (ESPN, Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News) are worthless for the most part.
There are several lesser known and very specific magazines/journals that I'd enjoy subscribing to, but they aren't a priority so I don't.
Although, I might really enjoy a Rolling Stone or Blender subscription.
