Wait a minute .....didn't the conservatives table the "crime" bill that dedicated a ton of taxpayer money to build more prisons etc.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

They need a prison cell to be given the rope to hang themselves with.

I'm opposed to capital punishment, but will admit that this idea is intriging. I'd consider it. Seriously.

While we are at it,
how about a fork and an outlet
or why don't we let them make their own rope out of their hair

The problem here is the same problem with capital punishment, and that is that is always a slim chance that someone is wrongly convicted. It would suck to have someone like that end up killing themselves before they could be exhonerated.
If it were possible to guarantee guilt 100% of the time, I would have no moral problem with this or capital punishment... or life-long sadistic torture for that matter.

I agree, and not to mention the rope would be re-usable so that will help keep taxpayer costs down, and be better for the environment...
Win/Win really...

That's because it would remove the feeling of responsibility a society must shoulder for condoning the killing of prisoners, and instead put it on the prisoner themselves. A half-way, polite, and guilt-free way of conducting capital punishment. In other words, a perfectly Canadian way of going about it.

I don't understand where the rope would go? Like behind the battery of their mobile?

My favorite variation on this idea is to give them as much heroin as they want. Keeps them calm, they probably won't bother eating and they die pretty quick.

I have always thought we could have 2 syringes on the wall, one with heroin one with strychtine and no way to tell which is which, I figure that would either really improve abstinace or get rid of the junkies alltogether within a short space of time.

But what happens when the criminal uses a pipe attached to their belt to support them in the hanging, thus faking their death in order to convince a gullible prison guard to read a note attached to their body? They could escape with the aid of their brother and mother in a suped up 4x4, leading the police on a high speed chase through a small ocean side town, only to lose them in a conveniently placed 4x4 beach race.

Wouldn't the rope in their cell be considered a weapon? A guard would have to taser him to enter the cell since he may have the rope hidden to take down a guard.

Maybe because they regret their crime so much they don't want to live?
Not everyone who commits murder has no soul and no heart and doesn't regret their actions. Some regret it so much they's rather be dead, and we should allow them to kill themselves.

Not surprising - Liberals always seem to side with the criminals and get offended when anything like this is said. LOL

The senator has already apologized for the remark. He doesn't set policy. Considering the fact that his own daughter was murdered ten years ago, I have absolutely no problem with his opinion. And it passes muster as fiscally responsible to boot.

My first thought was that I didn't like murderers having control over their own deaths. Their victims didn't, they shouldn't either.
