It's actually very common for open source software to be spread via torrents, it keeps the traffic down on the projects servers. I've never bothered torrenting something as small as Firefox, but I use torrents all the time for Linux distros.

Yup. Newsgroups over SSL.
The lion's share of my torrenting is 100% legal, like Linux distros and the Indie Music Bundle after buying it.

Was downloading a lot of torrents recently- and got the warning letter from Telus...
Do I need to heed their warnings, or should I delete it and forget?

Slightly off topic, but what news reader do you use for Windows? I use Unison for OSX but have no idea what to use on my PC.

Also I might look at newsgroups...

Get yourself a good newsgroup server, a newsgroup site, and then install Sickbeard and headphones (google 'headphones for sickbeard)
That'll cover any TV and music needs you have.

Actually, I was expecting to see more stuff like that. Though there were many pornos the really surprising thing was that The Young and the Restless made up fully 30% of the recorded downloads.
It conjures an image of how men and women respectively spend their personal time at home, living in totally different fantasy worlds.

I certainly used to torrent a lot, but I've actually stopped completely since I got my boxee box. Netflix cut a big chunk out of my torrenting activites and boxee has eliminated it. Basically the only thing I'll still torrent from time to time is UFC events if I missed them live. But when it comes to the shows I was watching (30 rock, the office) I can just catch em on places like globaltv.com and it's actually easier than torrenting.

Our office IP...
a) Shows as being located in Langley, BC (wrong.)
b) Shows two torrents being downloaded in November 2011 and nothing else.
My home IP... shows absolutely nothing. "... this IP is in the clear."

Downloading torrents is often like buying drugs on the street: you never know what it's laced with. I've had a computer totally screwed up with malware and viruses when other people used it to download torrents. Since I've had a decent paying job, it's rare that I download teh warez.

That can happen with jpeg's on basically any site, torrents are safe if you go about it properly.

Downloading torrents CAN get your viruses, BUT: so can surfing the net, opening emails, etc. If you know what you are doing, most of the time you are safe.
And even if you aren't safe, computers are easy to reboot, so you're going to have to come up with a better argument than "I'm rich enough to pay, so I don't have to get for free."
Get AVG, spybot, and you'll be fine as long as the sites you go have existed for more than 30 minutes.
That said, I agree that a lot of stuff is old, outdated, dubiously cracked, and not worth your bandwidth to download- but occasionally I've been able to find some music that is unavailable to legally purchase in Canada... but software/games/ even movies are always a crapshoot.

if you're a member of a private tracker site, or go to the big public ones with rankings, you'll never get burned by a torrent. i'll readily admit i was a huge pirater back in the days before Steam, but now that it's just as easy and fast to download a game legally as it is to pirate it (in many cases easier, since you don't have to worry about updates, cracks, etc) i buy most of my stuff now. the only game i've downloaded illegally in the past few years was Skyrim, but that was purely based on the fact that Bethesda is a terrible quality control developer and i wanted to see just how many bugs were in the game before i paid for it. and i'm thankful that i did, as the game was a complete mess at release and i quickly got tired of it

That's where I've gotten things, and (knock-on-wood) I haven't had an issue for a while.
And I agree, there are things that just aren't worth pirating- I'm a paying customer too. I just will also admit to testing the pirate waters, and in some cases, I'd say it's worth it to test out a game/program etc, or to discover a new musical artist you would never have paid any money to discover.
