One of the top two hostels in the world (that I've been to), the other being this one.

I suggest you watch this episode of departures and then ask yourself how much of Cuba you actually saw?

Was the run down pos your resort, one city, or did you spend a few months exploring the entire country?...

I dislike this comment by people.
I dislike people going to Cuba and thinking its OK to hand over hard currency directly to a government that oppresses its people in such a way. All the beautiful restaurants and shopping spots in Cuba are far out of reach in terms of cost to the people who live there, all sanctioned by their ####ty government.

Tourist dollars directly prop their government up and keep them in power.

Then again, if the USA dropped their moronic embargo, Cuba's economy would be doing just fine. They've got to earn their money somehow. Canada wouldn't exactly be a country of fatcats if we couldn't trade with the US either.

Havana is an amazingly cool city. If I ever go back to Cuba, nuts to the resorts - I'm hanging out it Hemingway's bar and drinking Cuba Libres for a week.

That's true, but old grudges die hard. Look at the Korean peninsula. As long as the same regime is in charge there will probably be no lifting of the economic embargo. Also, lots of tourists like Cuba because there are no Americans at the resorts.
