The two big ones are that you have eight seconds to get the ball into the offensive half instead of ten before a time count violation, and that a player can't hold or toss the ball away on a time count violation. If he does, he gets a delay of game penalty. Both rules designed to increase the transition game.

There are others that seem designed to increase scoring - goalie equipment has been slimmed down and you can score three goals on a a 5 minute power play now instead of two before the other team comes back to even strength,

The new rule changes are definately helping the Roughnecks. Youth and speed have definately worked in thier favour in the first couple of games. Should be an exciting game tonight.

Riggers fall in OT tonight. Watched some on the NLL network, seemed to be lots of penalties.

Both teams took some dumb penalties, but the officials were acting like they had a quota to fulfill. It was pretty annoying.

And the Roughnecks completely blew it. Barely showed up for the fourth quarter, and cost themselves the W as a result.

I think the refs were making sure their whistles were working....23 penalties overall. Some were stupid calls, some were brain farts from the players. But ya, the last half was bad for the 'Necks. D forgot how to cover, and scoring dried up; they seemed to be going for the fancy pass rather than putting the ball on the net.

A lot of the discretionary calls are being called closer this year - it falls to the players to be aware of the rules, the adjustments and adapt. I don't think the Riggers were happy with the reffing but Mike Board felt that the players need to be more disciplined.

Let's keep in mind that the Riggers were a post away from winning the game on a Scott Ranger goal with about 2 seconds to go in regulation.

Shameless plug: we've got a couple great interviews with Mike Board up on roughnecksradio.com.

Oh yeah - John Grant Jr is unreal.

The mascot thing is causing a bit of an uproar. My guess is that at some point this season Derek will make a heroic return and probably get the biggest pop of the season.

They've already made a Facebook page calling for his return.

My Orange Julius source with the Flames organization told me that Ken King personally made the decision to change the Hitmen mascot from Vulk to Farley Fox and thus present a more 'child-friendly' mascot at Hitmen games. Might not be a coincidence that the year the Flames take over the Roughnecks another mascot bites the dust in favor of a furry.

That all said my source is pretty solid considering he actually wore the 'Vulk' mascot costume for Halloween a few years back.

People complained when Vulk was replaced by Farley as Hitmen mascot too. There is a greater clash of demographics here though. Derek fit into the "tough, aggressive" nature of lacrosse, but the Flames obviously wanted a more kid-friendly mascot.

I am looking to go to the game tomorrow and on Ticketmaster there is a "Friends of the Roughnecks" code, anyone know where to get this?

At the end of one quarter, the Roughnecks and Rock are tied at 3-3. Catch the game live on TSN right now instead of that skills competition garbage.

Rock win a fairly entertaining game 14-13 in OT.
