I read the rules, apparently your chances of a prize (which includes coupons) are one in four. So far I have six coals, Lego Batman, Nuclear Dawn and 50% off any Valve game. Seven coals can be traded in for a prize.

I just checked. I have coal and a -50% Valve coupon. Very confusing. Was finishing Braid, maybe they came from that. Didn't realise I was taking part in anything.
Joining the holiday group gave me more coal.

It starts you with the coupon, and one of the objectives is to look at your inventory, which is where the first coal came from.

Yeah, never buy anything unless it's a daily deal or the last day (even if you missed the daily, it might come back on the last day). Apparently Rage was already for sale at $15 during this event, but it was "unadvertised".
