On principle I don't buy bottled water, I grew up on tap water, and continue to drink it today.
However, I will buy bottled water when there isn't an alternative. So if I'm on a road trip I'll buy bottled water, as it's a better option than Coke/Pepsi etc.
Additionally, when I get fast food I'll get a bottle of water in lieu of fountain pop as I prefer it over the garbage pop served at Wendy's/BK/etc. I also never finish fountain pop and I can put the top on a bottle of water to save it for later.

According to Aqua Safes website (not exactly unbiased as they are a water filter company) the amount of oil required for each bottle of water is the equivalent to filling up a bottle 1/4-1/3 with oil. Is there any truth to that?

Wouldn't be surprised when you factor in shipping, production, and the platic bottles.
The only time I get bottled water is on a camping trip because I don't have the 10 water jugs I would need, so I buy a flat of bottled water.
I love water, soooo fataing good when you're thirsty; I always have my water bottle with me. Calgary's tap water is really good tasting too, though there are a few old buildings I've sampled and it tastes off.
People who say they can't stand the "taste" of water period, and only drink pop/coffee/whatever, baffle me. It's water, wtf do you think it tastes like?

I buy bottled water quite a bit, but not because I think it tastes better or anything. I like having a bottle of water wherever I go and I'm a lazy person by nature so I don't want to keep on washing a Nalgene bottle or whatever they're called. I usually buy a bottle of Dasani or whatever is on sale at a gas station, fill it a couple times with the cold water cooler water at work and then buy another one.
I like really cold water and I like it now, and tap water doesn't provide that, so that's why I don't drink much tap water.

I respect your honesty, but that last statement is silly.
You want it now, turn it on, you want it cold and now, wait 5 seconds.
I keep a carafe of cold tap water in the fridge. I drink a lot of water, and just make sure to keep the thing filled. When I'm out and about, if I don't have a drinking container with me, I will buy a bottle of water to consume then re-use by just refilling it with tap water.
I generally don't buy bottled water only because i am used to getting it for "free".......if I a, going to pay for something to drink I'd rather have something Like Gatorade, iced tea, coke etc.....I also only really like ice cold water.........I have yet to drink a bottle of water and think that is is so much better than my tap or well water
I just make sure to have a case of water at home in the event of some unlikely disaster where fresh water becomes scarce or unavailable somehow. Other than that I much prefer drinking tap water. It is cheaper too!

Bottled water is an environmental disaster, many jurisdictions have banned the sale of bottled water because of this.
The industry is hugely profitable though, so don't except it to go away. I personally am absolutely baffled by anyone that would buy bottled water, unless you have no other choice.

Really? Which ones?
I drink tap water at home, but I buy bottles of water pretty frequently if I'm out doing things. If you're trying to avoid sugar or sugar substitutes I'm not sure what choice you have.
VOSS is ridiculously decadent, over packaged, and has that Mac toting hipster sense of smug.
That said, from the times I've had it, it's like no other - you get the sense of drinking pure nothingness. Ethereal. The glass you drink from had better not have any soap residue or you'll taste it.
Not something you drink all the time but I'd recommend at least trying it.
I bought a bottle of VOSS and I paid $3.69 for it. Yes, it's ridiculously expensive but probably the cleanest water I've ever tasted. Plus, the bottle is pretty neat so I kept it and I still use it today as a regular water bottle. As an extra bonus, people will think you're rich enough to regularly drink VOSS. Go buy one, taste it and keep the bottle. You'll be glad you did.

coke of tap water with sugar added
beer is tap water with yeast secretions
chicken soup is tap water with chicken carcass extracts
suckers
I make all my soups with bottled water. I specifically choose the smallest bottles as it keeps the freshest flavor and I never mix brands. Single malt chicken soup is the only way.

I'm sure you can find no possible way to bring water with you, if only they made insulated, portable containers for this purpose.
