Sorry Trout, but I think it goes deeper then that

Xenu, represive and cruel
chained aboard, he's negatively impacting yoooou
Theta Level 10, brain washings sweetest reward
you'r cash flows, Emptiness floats back to you

The Cult Boat soon will be making another run
The Cult Boat promises emptiness for everyone
Set a course with donations
Your mind on a new level

And L.Ron won't hurt anyone
It's an vacant smile on a unfriendly shore
It's Tom
Welcome aboard
It's Tom!

I found out a little while ago that a guy I knew from my favourite pub here in Shanghai is a scientologist. I was incredulous. The conversation started something like:
Me: "I don't really buy into any religion. I'm more interested in science."
Him: "Me too. I am a scientologist. I believe in science too."
He's Malaysian with English as his second language, so at first I thought it was just a language issue and I felt like I needed to explain to him what scientology is all about so that he wouldn't make an ass of himself saying these to other people in future. After my explaining all the ridiculous bull#### that scientology is he was just like "Yes. That's what I mean. I am a scientologist. I believe in science."
Absolutely blew me away.

Anyone who doesn't know much about scientology should check out operationclambake for some reading up on what it's all about.

^^

Yes. It is.
Both more ridiculous and more threatening. More ridiculous because it was dreamed up by some science fiction writer in a time when there was good scientific evidence to explain much of the world and explain away their bs. It doesn't have any deep traditions rooted in origins stories from times when people wouldn't know better. It is also documented that the whole founding of it is as a manipulative organization based on bs and fantasy constructed to manipulate and control people.

I have little time for any religion, but I can at least accept their origins and the place their traditions have come to have in the world. Scientology is just a huge, nasty cult.

Scientology was not developed with the betterment of the human spirit, and creating a tenant to do good deeds in mind.

It was created as a side bet with Robert Heinlen to make money by creating a religion by a failed sci-fi writer to prove that there is one born every minute and they're easily controlled.

Normal religions at their base have the concept of making its members better people, those religions sadly become corrupted by human failings.

Scientology is a cult dedicated to making as much money as it can for its senior members, its a pseudo spiritual MLMS, and thats never changed.

At the real roots of Christianity, that was the reason to. Difference being, it was a king (or comparable figure) who wanted to maintain/gain control and form his people into what was most advantageous to him and his kingdom.

So many stories like this, thankfully Scientology has a massive legal team to protect themselves.

Want to sue us? Fine, spend 10yrs in court with us we don't care.

I thought it was created as a tax shelter, and all the mumbo jumbo Dianetics scribbled down to provide 'holy documents' in support of it?

Church > Taxes.

What Scientology?

L Ron Hubbard was quoted multiple times as stating that religion is where the money is.

He didn't really care about the tax shelter side of it, he knew he could make millions by sucking in the gullible and creating the whole audit testing systems at enormous costs.
