One of the main reasons to charge for parking is to ensure turnaround so that there are spots available for those who need it.

Well that's false. I once was picking up my buddy at his place and parked my car in front of his house for 2 minutes (it was one of those no parking without a permit zones) and when I came out I had a ticket on my windshield. I called them up later that day and explained to them that I had just stopped by quickly to pick up my friend and go to Tim Horton's and they said it was fine and they'd cancel it.

You think a hospital in High River shares the same financial restraints as a bigger hospital in Calgary?

Also, why on earth should prime parking spots be free? Doctors pay to park at the hospital they work at and so should you. The land the parking stalls are on are not free.

Both recieve funding based on size and needs. Just because our hospital isn't anywhere near the size of those in Calgary doesn't mean we don't have funding problems. The hospital here is always fundraising through raffles and such to pay for new medical equipment that is dearly needed.

Ok and the land the parking stalls are on are probably worth 20--50 times more than the High river stalls. Why should prime parking stalls be free? I assume there is an abundance of parking stalls at the High River hospital right? Even though it's free....now if it was free to park at a Calgary hospital do you think you would find a spot? It's hard enough finding a parking spot now...

Parking stalls are not that easy to find here. You quite often have to use off street parking and that means parking in front of someones residence.
It doesn't have to be free, I just disagree with the way AHS gouges hospital users in Calgary. I get MRI's done twice a year and see an eye specialist another 2 times.

For the record I'm not saying it should be free. I parked longer than I paid for and got a fine, I deserve it. I was just wondering what the consequences of non-payment are, because in the absence of any real consequences I feel like the $3.50 I paid is closer to the value of my parking than $43.50 is.
Now that I know they will get me eventually, I'll probably just pay it. You're welcome, AHS.

Maybe you should move to the States and save money on parking at the hospitals there. I'm sure paying for parking at the hospitals there is their biggest expense.

I should move because I share a different opinion?

I am a retired physician and have always thought that parking charges flout the founding principles of the Canada Health Act and represent an immoral cash grab. To say that the money goes to buy new equipment or to offset security and maintain parking areas are poor excuses.
Canadians are happy to pay their health insurance and the healthy do not mind subsidizing the care of their sicker brethren. By the same token, if extra revenue is needed everyone should share the cost and not a disproportionate amount by the sick and their relatives.
