She already has a hospital named after her in Grande Prairie.
What an utter waste of time.

And a High School in Calgary too.

Hopefully Highway 2 doesn't turn into the nightmare that the Q.E.W. is in Toronto...

SO.....
Exactly how much money will we waste? I'm guessing about the same amount that we regularly pay to update the signs anyways. Just a guess though.

I like the idea of naming the highway after somebody (cause highway 2 is just so blah an impersonal), I just wish they would have named it after somebody with more of a local history. Perhaps "Dan the One Man Band" Highway.

What a waste of money. She has nothing to do with Canada anymore and I can't stand the fact that we still kiss their royal asses everytime they come here. I think it's funny that Ralph is rushing to get the signs up so they can see it when they take them to the Leduc International Airport on Wednesday.

I have a real disliking for the Royal Family. They are an extremely costly burden and one that is becoming increasinlgly embarassing with Prince Philips racist remarks Prince Harry having the brains of an ameoba.
Plus that Im Scottish and i hate the fact that we're ruled by another country, and idea that is so painfully out of date its absurd we allow it to continue.

Like the old hag will even notice the highway signs. I doubt she has EVER driven a car, why would she read road signs?

For someone like yourself who usually comes across as tolerant and open minded, thats about as narrow minded and uneducated a statement as you can make.
As for the other points, officially and unofficially she's still recognized as having ties to this this country.
Secondly, I am not sure how the Royal Family is an extremely costly burden on us as Canadians?

In addition to this - i.e. the road - there is apparently ANOTHER major announcement re: the Queen/Royalty coming when they are here to visit.
Wonder what it is?
(*edit - oops, forgot the source. Just heard it on QR77's news; one of Ralph's spokespersons mentioned something regarding it).

Maybe its just me, but shouldn't the Royal Family be showering Alberta and Saskatchewan with gifts? I mean, its our centennial, not hers.
Seems like we are being "treated" with her presence, and then we are expected to bend over backwards for a monarch, that I would wager the majority of Canadians no longer want.
Queen wants to impress me? put some money into a new Football/Soccer Stadium. Now that I wouldn't mind being called the QEII Stadium. Aside from that, who cares, she's just a glorified spoiled little rich kid.

I don't like anyone who is apparently ordained by god to rule over me because they are a superior human being and i am human scum that needs to be led (or exploited).
The Queen may seem tolarant but you are nothing but a peon and a simpleton to them, why should i treat them with respect? What have they ever done for the common man other then exploit their power and live of their backs?
The Queen has never worked a day in her life (along with generation upon generation of her family) yet lives in million dollar palaces and receives million dollar allowances. The royal families only task is to not screw up and to show up for photo-ops and they often cannot even do that right....
I have a lot of tolarance for people that work hard and deserve it, but the royal family is nothing more then a glorified welfare case self-ordained by 'god'....

I have no problem with the Royals or us naing a highway after the Queen. Their actions always make me laugh and I like them for that.
They found a great racket way back when and have been able to ride it for all its worth for a long time. More power to them for living the high life and not having to work for it.

Sorry but have you met the lady, and do you know her personally, because it sounds like her driver must have driven over your dog at a young age. The Royal Family does to a lot of good with regards to charity functions and what not, and I don't believe that they recieve a huge amount of money from the British government, and I don't think they get a cent from the Canadian government, unless you want to include the GG.
But the from god thing, and the ruling, give it a break, it is a centuries old tradition. I guess at the same time you must hate the pope and organized religion, and wish he would never have set foot in Canada.

To a lot of people, it is a big deal on principle.
Many Albertans (and Canadians) no longer hold any endearment or loyalty to the Crown. Furthermore, many find it distasteful that during our own centennial, we choose to celebrate someone else. She comes here thinking her own presence is gift enough.

We invited her and she took time out of her packed schedule to come here. I think that is gift enough, what should she have brought the crown jewels and given them to Alberta for turning 100?

And many do like to continue our affiliation with the Commenwealth and its head of state.

The British royal family is the largest source of private funding for the Russian Ballet. If they can do that for Russia, then why not something similar for a country where she is the symbolic head of state?

Do you really think having this woman come walk around a little bit (and having us pay millions for the privilege) is a "gift".
I don't blame the Brits for hanging onto this anachronism because it actually brings in money but we have enough crap named for that woman's ancestors. Why bother naming yet another thing in her honor?
She was lucky enough to be born into that family but what has she done for us? Maybe as a 100th anniversary thing they could name the highway for someone who actually has spent more than a week in Alberta?
