I'm not sure exactly what the red flower that I see Canadian's and British wear. Is it for memorial for the troops?
Thanks.
The battles of 'the great war' WW1 in northern France and Belgium, the Somme, Ypres, Paschendale, were all fought over a chalk landscape, chalk is very alkaline which poppies love, so the effect of the vast numbers of shells going off blew the top soil off the fields and exposed the chalk and created ideal conditions for poppies to grow.
The poor #######s in the trenches looked out over a vast grey landscape of death with thousands of bright red poppies growing amongst the bodies, it became a symbol to them of sorts.

Fifa has agreed that the England, Scotland and Wales teams can wear poppies on black armbands during the upcoming internationals.
The move came after Prince William and Prime Minister David Cameron wrote to Fifa asking that England be allowed to wear shirts embroidered with poppies.
Indeed...shot myself with my stick nailer (third time in 20 years) the other day.
Pricked by a poppy? Lol!
Cut it off, pulled it through, and wrapped it with electrical tape...back to work. I was using salvaged (hard) lumber again...just like the last time.
Hit a knot and away she goes.
1/4 inch lower and I would have lost my index finger on my right hand.
My poppy never fell off of my jacket lapel during the above mentioned incident either.
Nor did I "prick" myself with it...even when I was leaning into the linesman pliers to cut the haed of the b*stard off, so I could pull it through my finger.
I probably would have been ok on Juno Beach...
Respect the troops. Their sacrifice made it possible for us to be here discussing the "dangers" posed by the common poppy.
Anybody know why they changed the center of the poppies from green to black a few years ago? My dad still has one. Oh and the safest way to wear a poppy is to put a pin like a mini Canada flag. That's what I do.

Take a look at an actual poppy:
Real ones don't have green on 'em.

Michael Platt wrote a column in typical Calgary Sun style today, and he makes it seem as though he is the only one in Calgary wearing a poppy.
You know, I have actually noticed something similar here in Toronto. There definitely doesn't seem to be as many wearing them as in previous years. Is there a poppy shortage?!

As long as your donating I respect that, and it helps the vets. I usally spend about $20 or more on poppies at this time of year and buy multiples so that all of my outer coats and suit jackets have one. But I also try to pin it down by using my old unit pin to hold it in place.

I used to use eraser ends. I had a lot of useless pencils after a few years.
