And as the above poster said, if you're not doing stupid things then you don't have to worry about a horrible picture turning up on the internet.

You've obviously never had your picture taken from below.

Kim Kardashian soaks that $hit up, because it's what drives her business. Without those guys, she'd be a nobody. So though it might annoy her, she knows what side her bread is buttered on.

I would set up my own webzine and hire my own reporters and detectives to haunt at least the biggest names in the paparazzi business (not just reporters but also publishers etc) and publish everything I can about their private lives, claiming that the people have a right to know.

I'd randomly give out Shawinigan Handshakes, that would keep them at a distance for a while.

I wouldn't be able to take it. I can hardly stand running into people I know on the street. I love privacy an anomnymity, and yes, I occasionally engage in "stupid" behaviour and I would miss that if I had media following me around.

I wouldn't mind if they drove me nuts, but as long as they didn't drive me into a tunnel in France.

Nobody really knows how they would react. It depends how big of a "star" you are as well. I was in Las Vegas with my wife a few years ago and got within 5 feet of Michael Jackson when he was shopping with his daughter.
I think it was when he was shooting that doc I was in the Mirage and he rented the whole top floor of that hotel.
I said I never would follow a celebrity, but I kept following him until I got a handshake. His hands were huge lol.
Nobody let them shop. cameras galore.
He couldn't walk an inch without people surrounding him, taking pictures, etc.
Guy was weird in the last part of his life, but seemed very friendly to everybody.

I think there's a way to be rich and in the public eye, without being overly famous. There are many musicians and sports stars that do it. A lot of the people who constantly get hounded are ones that build their careers with it. Or are in horrible popular culture categories I would never want to be in the first place.
If I was a star of some sort, I would try to have a private public life like the first group. However, if I was one of those in the second group, it would probably drive me bonkers.

I wouldn't say that at all. Often it's just because they've used the paparrazo/media a lot to fuel their stardom too. It's a relationship that they've encouraged at parts of their career. Or, in our starcentric society, a tactic they've outright used to become popular. Examples like the Kardashians talked about in this thread. Paris Hilton is another obvious example.
There are exceptions of course, but I think there are ways around it if you truly don't like the limelight that much, and that the relationship often goes both ways. We all know of stars trying to stay in the media, trying to stay relevant, boost their image and therefore their careers.
