Excellent point. The CRTC has certain mandates that these providers have to follow and certain "must carry" channels. The government needs to get out of the entertainment business IMO.

And that attitude is exactly why Calgary radio consists mostly of country and Nickelback.

With kids movies it makes a ton of sense, blu-ray copy for the home theater, DVD for the minivan. Yes the kids seen Cars 200 times, but if it'll keep em quite in the back the combo pack makes sense.

I don't have a Blu Ray player yet but we'll often get the combo pack. It's a couple extra bucks so when we do upgrade, we won't be starting at square one with our video collection. The point about having a copy for the home and the van also stands.

I agree, i like having both, but they don't make you pay for both. Blu-rays were 20-30 bucks alone or in combo packs.

But Shaw owns Corus & Shaw Media, who owns YTV, Treehouse, W, Movie Central, CMT, Teletoon, Nickelodeon, Global, HGTV, Showcase, Food Network and History. They also own Nelvana who produces a huge amount of animated shows for those networks.
So of course the Shaw family prefers bundled TV packages.

Many also come with a downloadable digital copy with heavy DRM.

How exactly are consumers supposed to ask for it? Call Shaw customer service and wait on hold for 2 hours, then suggest it to the CS rep?

Why would shaw want to offer you service or anyone in that category. There has to be a minimum to make it worth their while. One service call a year (assuming you could get through) and they would be losing money on you.

Fewer SKUs. It makes sense. The person with a DVD player will buy it, watch the DVD and then say "God damn, I wonder how much better the Bluray version is than what I just watched."
Sooner or later, they'll cave and buy a Bluray player.

I cancelled cable because most of its crap. We were channel surfing crap all of the time. Even with a pvr, i still surfed and watched garbage. I got apple tv and now watch just the shows I want to watch. I actually have read 3 books this past month. Something I haven't done in years, and I quite enjoyed it. My kids would just watch tv for the sake of watching tv. Now they're handing in homework in on time because they're doing it right after school instead of watching tv. We sit as a family at the dinner table, and talk, instead of watching tv, which we used to do because I'd have some show recorded. Now, because I use apple tv, I'm picky about what we pay for, and we watch a lot less tv. So for me I'd pay a premium to choose individual channels.

The only problem I have is that I pay for SD or that SD takes up bandwidth when they should have more HD channels. Otherwise I'm fine with bundling. I'm surprised how often I like a show or two on a specific channel and the $0.35 i would save by not bundling wouldn't really matter to me.

It's the same thinking that got people riled up on another board when I suggested that Bell TV should stop selling SD receivers.
A lot of tech is pretty much backwards compatible but everybody doesn't realize that.
edit, I misread and thought they were selling blu ray/DVD players like the DVD/VHS players.

Indeed. I don't watch VisionTV, the Weather Network, etc, and I'm not that excited that my cable bill is higher because they're getting a cut of it.

No wonder customer service stinks to high heaven. Peter hasn't got a clue about what his coustomers think or want. He just assumes everyone is happy.

When I cancelled my Shaw services today, I made it abundantly clear the position of their CEO on bundled TV did not represent my opinion as a customer and was a major factor in my cancellation. When asked if there was anything they could do to keep my business, I stated "Yeah, refund me the 41 bucks a month I have been paying the last 3 years for non HD channels I never watch anymore, and going forward never charge me for them again."
"Sorry sir, we cannot do that. You have to pay for the standard channels."
"Sorry Shaw, I cannot pay you anymore."
I figure, in the 17 years, I have been a customer, they have got a little over $20,000 of my money, and they do NOTHING, to try and keep you as a customer. Shaw sucks, is getting worse, and is the worst run company in Canada. F U Shaw, blow it out your ass.

Bundled packages are one of the main reasons I've not had cable for nearly 8 years. To get the 4-5 channels I would actually watch, it'd cost nearly $100/month. No thanks, not worth it. Especially since I can get just about everything off the various channels sites these days on my existing internet connection.
