I belive demerits dissapear with the ticket when it's dropped from your record 3 yrs after conviction.

Demerits on your licence are gone after two years I believe.
For insurance though tickets stay on for 3 years for minor convictions like goin all the way states

Just wanted to bump this thread as I'm looking for auto insurance suggestions. Are TD and PC Financial still the leading candidates for a good price? Has anyone had to file a claim with them? How was your experience?
Any other company to consider? Western Direct?
My situation is a little unique in that I've had my license for many years now, but haven't always owned a car, and most of it has been out of country, so not sure if that will affect things.

I have TD Meloche Monnex, they've been pretty painless to deal with. I got hit a few years back and the claim went smoothly.

TD is usually better if you have a group rate. I don't recall who underwrites PC though. But I'm guessing no frills like their bank. For service its like cellphones, having a bad experience can happen with any of them. Just depends on your luck.

If you want to deal with an amazing broker, call Tim Ogryzlo.
I have been dealing with him for close to 20 years, and I have yet to find a broker that is so on the ball. If you are getting a better deal elsewhere, he is point blank about it, and will tell you to stay where you are.
Call him at 403-225-5106, and he will give you all your options. Tell him Trevor at Northland VW referred you, and he will take real good care of you. Over half of my clients are using him now.
Also, for motorcycle owners, if you are not with TD Primmum, you are getting ripped off. I have my 2008 Hayabusa insured with them for $410/year WITH collision. Most companies won't even insure Hayabusa's or ZX14's, and these guys are cheaper than what I would pay to insure a 600 cc bike elsewhere. It shocks me how many riders don't know how cheap they are for bikes.

I had to file a claim with TD this past spring, and they were great. Everything was painless, and they even let me get my rental in two different cities. (I had been planning to drive to visit my family when I had to take the car in, so I had a rental in Winnipeg AND Calgary.)

TD is generally pretty solid. AMA is good too. The best by a fairly wide margin is Cooperators. Whatever you do, stay away from Peace Hills. Caveat - often the individual adjuster will determine your quality of service.

kanetix.ca allowed us to shop rates and get a good deal through Dejardins insurance.
Brokers couldn't come close to the rate at all, and we wanted to deal locally over the internet. We haven't had to file a claim yet, but I do know we saved piles of money over going with TD.
Saved $600 a year using kanetix on our side.

Wow, you must have lucked out. Unless I'm not seeing something else, I wouldn't think any insurance company would cover your Winterpeg rental.

Be careful. Insurance is sometimes like everything else in life. Meaning you get what you pay for.
TD may be cheap, but if you have anything outside the box you will end up having to move your whole policy. As well with TD their claims service can be brutal.
Use a broker cause if you do have any troubles the broker is suppose to help you out and be an advocate for you.

You're telling me. I was pretty impressed myself.
It played out like this:
- I had planned on driving to Winnipeg.
- Body shop appointment was during the time that I intended to be out of town.
- Explained the situation to TD (and later Enterprise) and they transferred my reservation to the Winnipeg King Edward branch.
- Flew in, picked up rental.
- Dropped off rental, had my reservation transferred to Calgary.
- Flew home, picked up rental.
- Car was ready, dropped off rental.

Anyone with insurance knowledge mind answering my inquiries below? The phone lady at my insurer (TD Meloche) only confused me more and offered no help.
- Does making a no fault hail damage claim really increase your insurance? I made 2 back in 2010 and I don't remember it going up.
- How do traffic tickets impact insurance, in that is it getting convicted, charge, or the demerits that impact calculations? (I know some companies vary).

I think Insurance people are trained never to answer the question "will my insurance go up if I make "X" claim?"
They want you to be in constant fear of making a claim, even if your insurance will not go up.
I don't think I've ever gotten a straight answer from an insurance broker or adjuster. They love to dance around that question.

I just got off the phone with a claims adjuster at TD Meloche Monex and asked the exact same question. Her answer was that comprehensive claim like hail damage will not affect rates individually, however that I shouldn't be surprised if industry-wide rates will go up in the next year or two as insurance companies try to make back their losses on this type of event. So if this is true, chances are our rates will go up, no matter if we have hail damage or not.

See, thats what gets me. The lady I spoke to at TD said any non-recoverable claim (ie another insurance company or party doesn't repay them) will cause insurance to go up, unless "you can make the hail give us money" (her words not mine )

Yeah she is incorrect. It is a comprehensive claim. The only time would be if it was a collision loss that was unable to recover and you were at fault. Such as a single vehicle accident
And yes, the insurance as a whole goes up when there are a lot of claims, the definition of insurance is the spead the losses of the few across the many

Generally it is the conviction that matters as that is what shows up on your abstract and most go back 3 years whereas demerits only stay on for two years I believe. For criminal convictions they look back 5 years. At least this is the way the last company I worked for worked, others may be different
